BOSTON – UMass Lowell freshman Jimmy Sullivan (East Hampton, Conn.) took home the #AEBASE Rookie and Player of the Week honors, as announced by the league office on Monday afternoon.
It marks the first time Sullivan has received a weekly America East nod. He also becomes the first River Hawk to earn recognition in both the player and rookie categories of the conference’s weekly award.
Sullivan had a massive weekend at the plate in UMass Lowell’s series win over Maine. He hit a solid .500 (8-for-16), posted a staggering .688 slugging percentage, and reached base safely 11 times over the course of the four-game set.
The freshman crossed the plate three times over the series, including the difference-maker in the game three win. With both teams at a deadlock in the top of the second, Sullivan beat out the long toss from right to make a diving sweep across the plate for the 1-0 tally. In game four, Sullivan laced a RBI single to bring in the River Hawks’ last run of the outing. Behind the dish, he recorded 12 putouts, two assists and threw out a Black Bear advancing to second.
After this weekend, Sullivan is batting a team-leading .371 and ranks second with a .440 on-base percentage, totaling 49 on the season. Those marks also rank him second in batting average and fifth in OBP in the America East. On the defensive end, Sullivan is tied for fifth in the conference with six runners caught stealing.
