CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Boston College held its final practice before the Jay McGillis Memorial Spring Game Thursday morning inside Fish Field House. The BC Eagles were on the field for over two hours in full pads before getting the chance to play in front of their families in the spring game.

“It’s going to be all about the players,” head coach Jeff Hafley said when asked about Saturday’s spring game. “Hopefully, a lot of the players’ families and parents are going to come. It’s the first time they’ll be able to do that since I’ve been here, they haven’t been in the stadium. Saturday is going to be about the players. I want them to have a great time and enjoy having their families watch them play football.”

BC played six home games at Alumni Stadium in 2020, all without fans due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I want the players to be able to see their families afterward,” Hafley said. “I just want them to have fun, compete. Schematically, we’re not going to do too much. We’re going to be very vanilla. We’re going to let the kids line up, enjoy being in the stadium on a nice Saturday, and have a blast.”

Hafley and the coaching staff will divide up the squad into two teams, with quarterback Phil Jurkovec leading one side and quarterback Dennis Grosel on the other side.

“We’re going to start off, Phil and Dennis will be on opposite sides,” Hafley said. “Then, we’ll rotate the other guys in. In the first half, it’ll be very game-like, play ball, fourth down, punt it or kick the field goal, play it from wherever the ball winds up. Phil and Dennis will be the starting quarterbacks on both sides and after that, we’ll rotate guys in the second half. I want everybody to play. I want everybody to have the opportunity to play. We practiced so hard today and on Tuesday and all spring, I want everybody to get an opportunity to get reps in the spring game. They deserve it.”

Saturday’s Jay McGillis Memorial Spring Game begins at 11 a.m. with live television coverage on ACC Network.

Thursday’s practice notes: Mike Palmer had a big day roaming the middle of the field at free safety as the New York native picked off two passes during team periods … defensive tackle Cam Horsley also had a productive day with a sack and TFL … defensive tackle Khris Banks swatted down a pass during team period … freshman running back Xavier Coleman showed off his wheels with a long, 40-yard run along with a 20-yard burst … Brandon Barlow and TJ Rayam teamed up for a would-be sack … Marcus Valdez also contributed a sack and teamed up with junior linebacker Hugh Davis on a stop for a loss in the BC backfield … during 7-on-7 work in the red zone, Phil Jurkovec connected on touchdown passes to Joey Luchetti and Jaelen Gill … true freshman linebacker Casey Phinney recovered a fumble during team period … Matthew Rueve drilled a nice sideline completion to Ethon Williams, who toe-tapped to get both feet in … CJ Burton tipped a ball into the hands of Shawn Asbury II for an interception … both true freshmen have been very active in the secondary this spring for the Eagles … Lewis Bond broke free for a couple big plays in the passing game Thursday, including a beautiful, open-field spin move to pick up an extra chunk of yards … Jehlani Galloway also continued to be a productive target with a couple receptions during team periods … the breakdown of Team Boston and Team Eagles for the spring game will be announced on Friday. BC’s offensive players will wear white while the defense will wear maroon on Saturday.
