CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Boston College completed its second practice of the spring in just helmets Tuesday morning inside Fish Field House. The non-contact practice lasted approximately two hours.

Offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Frank Cignetti met with reporters following practice and discussed the jump from year one to year two in the new offensive system.

“Obviously, it’d been our first time together, we kind of had to find out a little bit about who we were in terms of personnel,” said Cignetti.  “As the season went on, we learned more about ourselves in terms of how would we have to call the game, the run schemes, the protection schemes, the passing game, to put ourselves in a position to be successful. We’ve seen that really carry over to the spring. Year one you’re learning it, year two you have a chance to master it.”

In year one under Cignetti’s watch, BC threw for 3,126 yards in 11 games, the most yards passing in a season for the Eagles since 2007. In all, the 3,126 yards were the third-best total in school history since 1996.

Only the 2007 Boston College team (323.9 ypg) threw for more yards per game than last season’s squad (284.2 ypg).

First-year starting quarterback Phil Jurkovec ended the year with 2,558 yards through the air and 17 touchdowns. It was the sixth-best single-season yardage total and touchdowns passing by a BC quarterback since 1996.

Cignetti spoke about the difference he sees in Jurkovec and the quarterback room today compared to last spring.

“Well, he knows what to do,” Cignetti said. “You got to remember, when Phil came in here last year, just like the rest of the guys, everything was new to him. The terminology, the actual scheme, the fundamentals, and technique. So they were starting over as quarterbacks. Now that they have a year in the system, they understand what to do and how to do it. They understand what it’s going to look like. And they can think and react much quicker and make good decisions.”
