When you think of the name Michael Jordan the first thing that comes to mind is the game of basketball. Many consider him the best of all time, including myself. Jordan, as we all know, won six NBA Championships with the Chicago Bulls. There are some that will know him for the crying memes that we see floating around on the internet. He is also an NBA owner as he owns the Charlotte Bobcats/Hornets. When it comes to the sport of NASCAR, you would not think of Jordan. Well, get ready for this because he is now a NASCAR team owner. It has taken him 14 years to get to this point. Jordan has entered a partnership with current NASCAR driver Denny Hamlin. Hamlin is currently second in the Cup Series championship series. There are only seven races left in the season.
Joining them on their team is Bubba Wallace who is leaving Petty Motorsports which is owned by one of the most famous NASCAR drivers in Richard Petty. They will be getting cars for Germain Racing. At the current moment, as far as sponsors, numbers and crew are in TBD mode. It all started in 2006 when Jordan became part of the ownership team of the Charlotte Bobcats. Well, Hamlin was a super fan of the team like Jack Nicholson is to the Lakers. Both Jordan and Hamlin formed a friendship that is still going strong. They both started playing golf together. Hamlin also started wearing the Jump man logo on his racing suit. The jump man logo is the silhouette of Jordan. What I did not know is that Michael’s father had been taking him and his siblings to Winston Cup Races when they were young.
Jordan fell in love with the athleticism of drivers and motor cross riders. One of the deciding factors for Michael to get into NASCAR was Darrell Wallace Jr. aka Bubba Wallace. What Wallace had to go through this year with the confederate flag being removed to being the only African-American driver in the sport was a factor. We will now get to see all of this at Daytona International Speedway this upcoming February. I will admit to you all I am not the biggest NASCAR fan. I am within a three to a three and half hour drive from Daytona. I am excited that Michael Jordan is now an owner. I think this will bring some excitement heading into 2021. I believe that all sports would love to have an iconic athlete make an impact in a positive way.
With Denny Hamlin and Bubba Wallace, it will not take Michael Jordan long to bring home a championship. That is what every owner and driver wants. I am hoping that people take this as a positive. I know that not every NASCAR fan will like this. The sports world is great and these are the kind of moments that many of us love. It might get me to definitely watch the Daytona 500 in 2021. I have been told that going to a race is fun. Let’s see how Jordan does as a NASCAR owner. I can see him doing a great job!
