CLEVELAND- The Browns are a favorite to make the playoffs again. The Browns failed miserably last season and any talk of the team making the playoffs may result in a few chuckles and bad jokes. However, the new Browns General Manager Andrew Berry made several deals this off-season that make even the most skeptical fan or outside observer seriously question the notion of the Browns missing the playoffs. The Browns made several splash signings already including right tackle Jack Conklin, tight end Austin Hooper, and strong safety Karl Joseph. However, there is always a slight chance that the Browns could offer Joseph in a trade package for Jets safety Jamal Adams.
Why on Earth would the Browns trade for Adams? They already have their strong safety for 2020 so this talk looks like a real head-scratcher. Berry said the Browns would look to make several impact deals to make the team a serious contender. Cleveland made several deals that give fans the image of an organization that is desperate to win the Super Bowl at some point in the next two years rather than a significantly longer period of time. Adams is by far the top strong safety in the NFL right now. Trading for him would require a significant return for the Jets to justify such a trade. The Jets don’t want to trade him. A team with the right amount of cap space needs to prepare to give the Jets an offer that they can’t refuse. What would a trade proposal look like? Let’s go over a few possibilities.
Trade Proposal one
Browns trade:
Karl Joseph
2021 first-round pick
2021 second-round pick
Jets trade:
Jamal Adams
Browns fans would be very excited getting Adams but there would be a few problems with this trade. If the Browns only get Adams without any draft compensation, some fans would not be too thrilled with this trade. It is well known that Browns fans love their draft picks and the 2021 draft is in Cleveland which everyone should remember when discussing such possibilities. Any trade proposal should include Joseph so that the Jets are compensated fairly with another quality strong safety.
Trade Proposal two
Browns trade:
Karl Joseph
Olivier Vernon
2021 first-round pick
Jets trade:
Jamal Adams
Assuming the New York Jets have the cap space and the interest in such a trade, it looks like a nice return for both teams. The Jets would receive two impact defensive players assuming Vernon doesn’t suffer any major injuries in 2021. Such a trade would work out nicely for the Browns too since they would only give up one draft pick, a strong safety on a one-year deal, and a defensive end that they can afford to give up assuming the team signs Jadaveon Clowney or Everson Griffen. The Jets have the 11th most cap space so this trade may be possible.
Trade Proposal three:
Browns trade:
2021 first-round pick
2021 second-round pick
2021 third-round pick
Jets trade:
Jamal Adams
This is what the Jets may ask for in return but there is very little chance the Browns would agree to such a trade. Cleveland wants to build a young team and giving up three draft picks could set the Browns back. This trade shouldn’t and probably wouldn’t happen. There are better offers to present to the Jets.
Assuming one of the first two trade scenarios happens, the Browns would be in a position to strengthen their defense and have the balance they desperately need. It’s not likely the Browns would be able to land Adams and sign Clowney so this would have to be an either-or scenario. Cleveland could trade for Adams and sign Griffen.  Having both Clowney and Adams could make it difficult to extend the contracts of all of the younger key players such as Myles Garrett, Nick Chubb, Denzel Ward, David Njoku, Larry Ogunjobi and Baker Mayfield.
The Browns ranked 21st in the NFL in total defense last season. Such a rank is an improvement but the team needs to progress. Trading for Adams would be a major win for Cleveland. Adams has the speed, hit power, and defensive playmaking ability that Cleveland needs. The Browns have the most cap space in the NFL.
