The Tampa Bay Buccaneers announced earlier this week they will be inducting their 14th member of the Buccaneers Ring of Honor. The member that will be inducted will be former defensive coordinator Monty Kiffin. The other 13 members are Lee Roy Selmon (NFL Hall of Famer), John McKay, Jimmie Giles, Paul Gruber, Warren Sapp (NFL Hall of Famer), Derrick Brooks (NFL Hall of Famer), Mike Alstott, Doug Williams, John Lynch, Malcolm Glazer, Jon Gruden, Tony Dungy (NFL Hall of Famer), and Ronde Barber. All these players, coaches and owners all have played a significant role in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ success. Monty Kiffin was part of the only Buccaneer team that won the Super Bowl in 2002. He is the one who came up “Tampa Two” defense. The defense that won the Super Bowl against the Oakland Raiders. He will join the head coach of that team in Jon Gruden.

Monty Kiffin is the longest-tenured coach in Tampa Bay Buccaneers history. He spent all 13 of his season within Tampa Bay. He helped not only Gruden but also Tony Dungy. When Dungy was hired as the head coach he wanted Kiffin as his defensive coordinator. One of the key factors about Kiffin is he was a great leader and teacher. He was able to get the best out of his players. The “Tampa Two” is a version of the cover two scheme. During Kiffin’s tenure, the Buccaneers allowed the fewest points per game 17.5. Tampa was ranked second in yards per game 286.8 per game and 293 takeaways. From October 29, 2000, till November 9, 2003, the Bucs defense had a 50-game streak with at least one sack and one turnover. No other defense has come close to the feat before and since.

The Bucs made the playoffs in seven of the 13 seasons he was on the staff. One of the biggest turnovers for the Tampa was in the NFC Championship game against the Philadelphia Eagles. The same Eagles team the Buccaneers had trouble defeating. Ronde Barber had the interception that was the final game at Veterans Stadium. It sent the Tampa to the Super Bowl. He helped players like Derrick Brooks and Warren Sapp get to the Hall of Fame. In my opinion, Ronde Barber and John Lynch will be there soon. At the time, no matter who the head coach was in Dungy or Gruden, the Buccaneers were known for their defense. I am not saying the offense wasn’t good, but the success came from the defensive side of the ball. Kiffin deserves to be in the Ring of Honor.

The ceremony will take place during the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 2020 season. I have a funny feeling that his name will be added to the away sideline near the third level at Raymond James Stadium. Most are excepting the rest of the other 13 will be in attendance outside of McKay and Selmon who have passed away. On behalf of the fans of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, we would like to welcome Monty Kiffin to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Ring of Honor.
