We take a look into the games and awards this past week in the SWAC and see who is making moves. The season is winding down and the SWAC Championship is still to be decided in the West

Southern (7-4, 5-1) won its third straight game outscoring Jackson St. (4-7, 3-3) 23-10 in the second half. JSU did have 308 yards rushing, but it was not enough to stop the Jags from coming one game closer to clinching the West and a spot in the SWAC Football Championship. QB, Ladarius Skelton was named the Co-Offensive Player of the Week with his 304 yards of total offense. In the game, he threw for 133 yards and a touchdown while rushing for 171 more and two touchdowns. Next week, they play the Grambling St. (6-4, 4-2) in the Bayou Classic. The winner will represent the West in the title game.

East leader, Alcorn St. (7-3, 5-1) clinched the division and a spot in the SWAC Title Game with a 34-28 win over Alabama A&M (6-5, 3-3). They still need to win next week against Jackson St to secure the home field for the game. A&M RB, Jordan Bentley, was the other Co-Offensive Player of the Week when he rushed for a school-record 245 yards and four touchdowns. He is also the school’s leader in career rushing yards, career touchdowns, single-season rushing yards, single-season touchdowns, and single-game rushing yards. Alcorn St. DB, Juwan Taylor, was named the Defensive Player of the Week based on his 10 tackles, interception and 0.5 tackles for loss performance.

Other winners were:

Specialist of the Week: K, Miguel Mendez of Grambling St. as he made two field goals of 23 and 20 yards. He averaged 35 yards per punt and placed two of those inside the twenty-yard line

Newcomer of the Week: Freshman, Niko Duffey from Alcorn St had 17 carries for 100 yards and a touchdown to lock down the honors this past week. His touchdown was from 20 yards out and he averaged 5.9 yards per carry.
