Spinners’ Jimenez Extends Hitting Streak To 10 Games
BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Going into Wednesday night’s game, the Lowell Spinners, proud affiliate of the 2018 World Champion Boston Red Sox, were looking to clinch the series with a win over the Brooklyn Cyclones, affiliate of the New York Mets.
The Spinners (29-15) were able to do so, dispatching the Cyclones (25-19) by a final of 3-1 thanks to some strong pitching and some offensive breakthroughs late in the game.
Noah Song got the start on the mound for Lowell on the mound – making just second professional start. Song went two innings, allowing one hit and striking out four. He would finish with a no-decision, however.
Yusniel Padron-Artilles followed him with six strong innings of his own, allowing just one run on four hits while striking out eight en route to his league-leading sixth win of the season. Jenrry Mejia followed him in the ninth inning, picking up the save while allowing one hit and striking out one in his return to MCU Park.
Gilberto Jimenez started the game off in the leadoff spot and after leading off the game with a single to right field, was quickly removed in the top of the third in place of Luke Bandy. The single extended his hitting streak to 10 games.
They were led offensively by Jaxx Groshans who went 2-for-3 with a double and a walk.
After the first five innings went scoreless, it was the Spinners who got on the board first on a single by Nick Northcut, scoring Groshans from third base. Joe Davis, who was at second, attempted to score as well but was cut down.
After the Cyclones tied it up in the bottom of the sixth, Lowell retook the lead in the next frame when Cameron Cannon launched his second professional home run – and second on this road trip – over the left-field wall, giving the Spinners a 3-1 lead.
The Spinners are back in action with a single game on Thursday night – first pitch is at 7:00 p.m.
