Spinners Lose to Brooklyn

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Going into Friday night, the Lowell Spinners (11-4), proud affiliate of the 2018 World Champion Boston Red Sox, expected to play two games against the Brooklyn Cyclones (8-5), affiliate of the New York Mets, but following an hour and 49-minute rain delay, both teams convened and wound up playing just one game Saturday night.

The Spinners were able to get a runner to third base in the top of the ninth, but could not pull out the victory – falling to the Cyclones 8-7 on Saturday night. The second game of the doubleheader is to be made up on July 30 as part of a doubleheader when the Spinners next return to MCU Park with first pitch in the first game at 6:00 p.m.

Lowell got a solid outing from starter Aldo Ramirez. The 18-year old went five innings, allowing just two runs on seven hits while striking out five and walking just one.

The Spinners got on the board first in the opening frame when Nick Northcut singled through the left side of the infield, scoring Xavier Legrant and Gilberto Jimenez from third and second base respectively, giving them an early 2-0 lead.

Brooklyn got one right back in the bottom half, as Zach Ashford scored on a Joe Genord single, cutting Lowell’s lead in half. In the top half of the second, the Spinners kept the runs coming when Legrant launched a long three-run home run over the left field fence, his first of the season, giving his guys a 5-1 lead early. Again, Lowell scored in the top of the third when Jonathan Diaz tripled with two outs in the inning and later scored on a balk, making 6-1.

In the bottom half, the Cyclones again crawled their way back on a home run by Genord, his second hit of the game. For the next three innings, the Spinners and Cyclones were quiet until the Cyclones erupted for six two-out runs off Lowell reliever Robinson Leyer.

The Spinners would get one back in the top of the seventh on a home run by Marino Campana – his second of the season – that cleared the left field scoreboard by plenty, cutting Brooklyn’s lead to 8-7. That, however, is where the scoring on both sides would stop.
