Opening night at LeLacheur Park may not have been a picture-perfect evening for baseball. Yet, the Lowell Spinners (1-0) and the Connecticut Tigers (0-1) got there New York Penn League seasons underway. These players have been spending their Spring in Florida at the home of their parent team’s camps. Now it was time to get them into game action to begin the long journey toward the show. The final score in this one was Spinners 6 Tigers 3.

Both teams trotted out new managers. For the Tigers, it was Brayan Peña who had 638 games played at the major league level with five different teams. In 2018, he led the Tigers Gulf Coast team to a 37-18 record and a league championship. For the Spinners, it is now Luke Montz who is the head man. Last season he was part of the Double-A Portland Sea Dogs staff.
If there is an advantage to having a short season team so close to where the major league team is located, the Boston Red Sox have it. The Spinners are a mere 45 minutes away. It affords them the chance to send players up to Lowell to begin rehab. Such was the case on opening night. Steven Pearce, out with an injury, was sent to the Spinners to get some at-bats as the DH. For the night, he went 1-3, with a double and a sac fly RBI. After his four plate appearances, Pearce said his back “felt great”. “It was a lot better than I thought”.
As for the game itself, the Spinners got good starting pitching from Yusniel Padron. He pitched six innings, gave up three hits, one earned run and had seven strikeouts. On the offensive side, the Spinners banged out ten hits, five of them for extra-bases. They would score runs in each of the first four innings of the game. The first night of the season turned out to be a good one for the home team.
The Spinners grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first on a run-scoring base hit from Marino Campana. It scored Kervin Suarez who led off the first with a walk off of Tigers starter Carson Lance (two innings, four hits, two earned runs, one walk, four strikeouts). The Tigers tied the game in the second on a RBI single by Julio Martinez who drove home Jordon Verdon who had double after the first two men were retired. Lowell took the lead for good in the second on a sac fly by Nick Decker that scored Nick Northcut. It was 2-1 Lowell. Northcut would add to the lead in the third with a two-run double to left. It was part of a three-hit, three RBI night for him. Lowell made it 5-1 on a Pearce sac fly that plated Suarez who doubled to left leading off the inning.
As good as Lowell’s starting pitching was, their bullpen made things a little interesting in the seventh. Walks were a key to the Tigers pushing across two runs and three walks. A hit baseman against Joan Martinez got him into trouble. Two of those walks came around to score on a single to center field by Eliezer Alfonzo off of the second pitcher of the frame, Miguel Suero. Connecticut was back into the game down 5-3. Lowell got one of those runs back in their half of the seventh as Northcut delivered his third hit and third RBI when his single to left brought home Campana to make the score 6-3.
Brendan Nail came out of the Spinners pen and shut things down going an inning and a third of no-hit, three strikeouts ball. He registered save number one on the year in support of Padron (1-0). The loss goes to Lance (0-1).
After the game, the Spinners manager said: “it felt good to win on opening night”. On Pardon, his manager thought he “set the tone and pitched well”. Lowell outfielder, Gilberto Jimenez, also produced a three-hit night from the nine spot in the order.
On Saturday, both teams are back at the ballpark for a five o’clock start.
