TUSCON, Ariz. – The UMass Lowell baseball team suffered a 20-5 defeat to Arizona in the series finale on Sunday afternoon.
For the second game in a row, the River Hawks (0-4) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, this time behind a Steve Passatempo (Medford, Mass.) run-scoring single and a Cam Climo (Billerica, Mass.) sacrifice fly.
“This was an extremely humbling weekend,” remarked Head Coach Ken Harring. “Arizona is the best team we have played in the Division I era. I thought we swung the bats well all weekend and played pretty well on defense. It is obvious that we need to get better on the mound, and we will. It is a long season and we just need to get better each time out.
The duo led the visitors at the plate, both recording two hits and RBI, with Passatempo crossing the plate, as well. Ciaran Devenney (Manalapan, N.J.) also had a two-hit day and scored, while Mark Tumosa (Willington, Conn.) scored a pair of runs.
After falling behind the Wildcats (4-0) jumped out for 12 unanswered runs, including seven in the second to open a 12-2 advantage.
UMass Lowell got back on the scoreboard with a three-spot in the seventh with three consecutive two-out singles. With Devenney on second and Tumosa standing on first, Oscar Marchena (Miami, Fla.) began the spurt with Passatempo and Climo following suit to cap off their impressive afternoons.
Arizona’s Matt Fraizer went 4-for-7 with six RBI and two runs, while Ryan Holgate recorded two hits and drove in five for the hosts.
The River Hawks return to action next weekend with a three-game set at No. 9 Georgia.
