The holidays are fast approaching. Schools are finishing up their class work with the end of the semester in sight. For hoops players, like those in America East, basketball will become priority number one for the next several weeks. Here is some of what’s going on.

For a couple of teams, last week was a very good seven days. The Stony Brook Seawolves are off to a ten and two start thanks to a couple of victories last week. The ten wins are the most ever in the non-conference portion of their schedule at the division one level in the regular season.

With those kinds of mentions comes some notice from outside the league. The collegeinsider.com mid-major poll has the Seawolves ranked at #15 for this week.

Another team making some noise is the Vermont Catamounts. At eight and three, the Cats are riding a five-game winning streak.  Last week, Vermont handled a couple of fellow New England schools to keep the streak intact. as wins over Ivy League member Harvard at home, and a road win at Northeastern kept the streak alive.

These two teams are also getting noticed for players on their rosters who have been performing  well. For Stony Brook, Akwasi Yeboah is averaging 20.4 a night and Vermont’s Anthony Lamb (20.3). They have been named to the Lou Henson Watch List. These two players are only two of 51 across the country that are averaging twenty points a game this season.

The Hartford Hawks (5-7) have gotten off to a bit of a slow start which is a little surprising since they returned eleven players from last year team. Three of them, John Caroll, Jason Dunne, and J.R Lynch are all active one thousand point scorers. The Hawks are one of only two division one programs to have three active thousand point players.

The #AEHoops player of the week also plays in Hartford. Senior forward, George Blagojevich earns his first honor of the season and of his career. The Hawks big man averaged 27 points, 11 rebounds, four assists, and two steals in an impressive week on the hardwood. He set career-highs in points and rebounds in a victory over Bryant College last Wednesday night. He went for 30 and 15 in that contest. On Sunday, Blagojevich had 24 points in Hartford’s win over Oakland.

The #AEHoops Rookie of the week is Miles Latimer of Stony Brook. The freshman from Fairfax, VA averaged 16 points and three and a half assists in a perfect week for the Seawolves. He dropped 18 points on LIU Brooklyn, then followed that up by scoring 14 in a win over Delaware.  This is Latimer’s first honor of his career.
