SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Boston College junior guard Ky Bowman is among 20 players nationally named to the 2019 Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year Award preseason watch list.

Announced by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame on Monday, Oct. 15, the Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year Award watch list recognizes the top 20 point guards in Division I men’s college basketball.  Named after the Naismith Basketball Hall of Famer, former Boston Celtic guard, and former head coach of the Boston College Eagles from 1963-69, the annual honor is now in its 16th year.

Bowman – the Nation’s Most Dynamic Guard – was the only player in the country to average at least 17.6 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 4.7 assists during the 2017-18 season.  Since 1990, only 10 players have posted those averages for an entire season, including three top three NBA draft picks (Ben Simmons, LSU; Evan Turner, Ohio State; Penny Hardaway, Memphis).

The Havelock, N.C. native ranked first nationally in rebounding among all players 6-1 and under.  Since 1996, only six players 6-1 or shorter have averaged at least 6.8 boards per game or better.

Bowman was the only player in the ACC to rank among the top 11 in the league in scoring, rebounding, and assists in 2017-18 and among all returning players in the ACC in 2018-19, he ranks second in scoring, fifth in rebounding, and fourth in assists.  His six double-doubles in points and rebounds were most by a point guard in the ACC in 2017-18.

A national committee comprised of top college basketball personnel determined the watch list of 20 candidates. By mid-February, the watch list of 20 players will be narrowed down to 10 players.  In March, the five finalists will be announced.

“For more than fifteen years, the Cousy Award has recognized the top collegiate point guard annually, forming a fraternity of honorees who have gone on to have tremendous success in the game,” said John L. Doleva, President and CEO of the Basketball Hall of Fame. “They exhibit many of the characteristics that made Bob Cousy a tremendous player and floor general and we are excited to watch the men on this watch list as the season progresses.”

The winner of the 2019 Bob Cousy Award will be presented at the ESPN College Basketball Awards Show presented by Wendy’s in Los Angeles on Friday, April 12, 2019, along with the other four members of the Naismith Starting 5. Additional awards being presented and receiving support from Eaton Ephesus Lighting include the Jerry West Shooting Guard Award, the Julius Erving Small Forward Award, the Karl Malone Power Forward Award and the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Center Award. Broadcast information will be released by ESPN at a later date.
