SAN FRANCISCO – Former Boston College baseball player Chris Shaw earned his Major League Baseball call-up on Friday afternoon by the San Francisco Giants. A 2015 first-round draft pick following a standout career for the Eagles, Shaw was ranked as the No. 5 prospect in the Giants’ organization by MLB.com.

Shaw played in 101 games at Triple-A for the Sacramento River Cats and recently returned from a stint on the disabled list on August 22. He hit .259 with a .505 slugging percentage in the Pacific Coast League. Shaw was tied for fifth in home runs with 24 in the league at the time of his promotion and 11th in slugging.

Selected with the 31st pick of the first round of the 2015 MLB First-Year Player Draft, Shaw became the fourth of five first round picks in BC history. He is the first Eagle to be called up to the majors since Tony Sanchez (2013 – Pittsburgh), who is BC’s highest drafted player as the fourth selection in 2009. Shaw is the 41st BC player to reach the big leagues and the first from Mike Gambino‘s tenure as head coach.

In the professional ranks, Shaw has hit .275 and slugged .509 in 404 career games. He has totaled 105 doubles and 81 home runs; surpassing 20 in a season twice in his career. At Boston College, Shaw hit .274 but hit .329 and .319 in his sophomore and junior seasons. He ranks ninth in program history with 23 career home runs, including 11 in his 2015 All-America season.

MLB rosters expand on Saturday for September call-ups, but the Giants’ move was necessitated by the trade of veteran outfielder Andrew McCutchen to the New York Yankees. San Francisco is home this weekend for a series against the New York Mets beginning Friday night at 10 p.m. ET.
