LOWELL SPLITS DOUBLEHEADER WITH CATS
Spinners pull within 1.5 games of division-lead
TROY, NY – After being rained out on Friday night, the Spinners rolled into Tri-City looking to build on a three-game win streak in a doubleheader.
The Spinners stumbled out of the gate in Game 1 of the double-header. Starting pitcher Taylor Ahearn surrendered four earned runs in three innings of work on six hits.
Lane Milligan singled in the top of the fourth and set himself up to score on a double from Ramfis Berroa to make it a 4-1 ball game.
Victor Garcia threw two innings of relief, surrendering two earned runs on two hits and a walk while striking out three.
Lowell put together a late rally in the top of the seventh after Trey Ganns reached on a fielding error and Dylan Hardy brought him in to score on a double. Jonathan Ortega later grounded out but managed to bring in Hardy, making it a 6-3 ball game. But it was too little, too late as the ValleyCats took the first game of the series.
Yorvin Pantoja took the ball in the second game and delivered one of his best outings of the season. In six innings, he struck out a pair, allowed four hits, walked none, and surrendered an earned run.
After little production throughout the game, the Spinners mounted a rally in the top of the seventh when Tyler Dearden singled with one out. After getting moved over to second, Dylan Hardy singled home Dearden to tie the game at 1-1, sending the game into extra innings.
Due to the new extra-inning rules in Minor League Baseball, Alberto Schmidt started the inning at second base. Korby Batesole singled home the go-ahead run to make it 2-1.
Andrew Politi closed out the game with two innings of scoreless baseball. He struck out one and walked one but did not surrender a hit as he picked up his first professional win.
With the doubleheader split, the Spinners now head home for a three-game set with the Vermont Lake Monsters as Thaddeus Ward takes the hill on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 5:35 p.m.
