New York Penn League News & Notes

The final month of the NYPL season has arrived and playoff spots, as well as division champions, are still to be decided. Here’s a look at how the league stacks up as the final month begins.

The Tri-City Valley Cats are the leaders of the Stedler Division. One of the reasons for this may be the hot bat of Gilberto Celestino. He is fifth in the chase for the batting title with a .323 average, third in hits with 41, and is one of eight players tied with four home runs. His value to the Valley Cats may be in the stolen base category where he is tied for the league lead with 14. He is a dual-threat guy with both bat and feet.

Another player having a fine offensive year is Auburn Doubledays, Jacob Rhinesmith. He is third in batting at .331, fourth in hits with 40, third in on-base percentage. 401, and third in triples at four. The Doubledays are trying to catch Mahoning Valley for the Pinckney Division championship.

Hudson Valley pitching has been the team calling card for most of the year. The best of the bunch may be Paul Campbell with a 3-1 record and a 1.67 ERA. Campbell has the fifth lowest batting average, at .200 (23-for-115), and also has the fifth highest SO/9IP at 9.74 ( 35 K’s in 32.1 innings). Campbell has done a good job of forcing hitters to make contact by allowing only five walks in 32.1 innings for a ratio of 1.39. That ratio places him third in lowest BB-IBB/9 IP.

In the bullpen, the Renegades are getting help from Simon Rosenblum-Larson.  He is second in highest SO/9 IP ratio for relievers at 14.14 (33 punchouts in 21 innings), and like his other pitching buddies, walks very few batters.  Larson has walked only three hitters in those 21 innings for a ratio of 1.29 which has him tied for second in lowest BB-IBB/ 9IP.

Despite an under .500 record on the hill (1-2), State College hurler Jake Dahlberg has been good as a starter for the Spikes. He leads in innings pitched with 50, is fifth in strikeouts with 44, total batters faced with 197, and in at-bats against with 184.

Catching is a position that every organization is trying to fill. The Lowell Spinners may have done just that for now and in the future. Kole Cottam, the Red Sox fourth-round draft pick, is starting to show why he was drafted that high.  Before the Spinners set out on their current six-game road trip, Cottam’s bat was getting warm. He has reached base safely in five straight games and had multi-hit games in three of his last five. He began this trip as Lowell’s leader in home runs with three, and in RBI with 20.

Will be back next week with more from the New York Penn League.
