LOWELL FINISHES SWEEP OF DOUBLEDAYS
Extra inning victory completes three-game sweep in Auburn
LOWELL, MA – The Spinners (13-14) completed their first sweep of the season with a down-to-the-wire victory over the Auburn Doubledays (14-12).
Auburn threw the first punch with a run in the first inning off of Brian Brown. The ninth-round draft pick has been solid all season for the Spinners and turned in another strong start with five innings, four strikeouts, two runs (one earned), six hits, and a walk, lowering his ERA to 1.74.
The Spinners got back on the board the following inning when Cole Brannen came to the plate with runners in scoring position. He grounded out to first but Alberto Schmidt was able to score from third on a missed catch error by the Doubledays to tie the game.
The Doubledays pulled ahead in the bottom of the fourth after bringing in the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly, an unearned run for Brown.
Schmidt drew a one-out walk in the top of the fifth and was put into scoring position on a wild pitch. With a chance to tie the game, Brannen did not disappoint with a grounder up the middle to score Schmidt from second. Three-time All-Star Brandon Phillips, continuing his 2018 tenure with the Spinners, used his big league experience and put the Spinners ahead with a single to left to bring home the speedy Brannen.
Lowell added to its lead in the top of the seventh with Grant Williams kicking off the inning with a single. After moving to second on a wild pitch, Korby Batesole drew a walk to put two on for Brandon Phillips. Just like the at-bat before, Phillips put hardwood on a ball to left field to bring in a run from second to make it 4-2. The job wasn’t done yet though as a bases-loaded single from Tyler Dearden brought in Batesole to make it 5-2.
Rio Gomez threw two innings of relief, allowing a run with two strikeouts on four hits. He was relieved by lefty Oddanier Mosqueda who walked three, allowed two (one earned), and struck out a pair though the Doubledays would come back to send the game to extra innings 5-5.
Ramfis Berroa, pinch running for Phillips, began the 10th inning on second base and was moved over to third when Devlin Granberg singled. Dearden put the Spinners on top with a sacrifice fly to bring home Berroa. Xavier LeGrant brought home Granberg with a single to make it 7-5 and Schmidt added to his big night with an RBI-single to give Lowell a three-run lead.
Victor Garcia came in to close it out for the Spinners to pick up his first save of the season.
The Spinners have now won four games in a row and head to Batavia for a three-game series with a chance to end the road trip over .500. Yorvin Pantoja takes the ball on Saturday with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
