New York Penn League News & Notes

Happy fourth of July holiday from all of us at NGSC Sports. The New York Penn League is in full swing, things are happening, so let’s take a look.

Another week, and another promotion, this one involves the Lowell Spinners Garrett Beige who spent the entire 2017 season in Lowell. He was an NYPL All-Star and returned to the Spinners in 2018. However, it was only for a short time. Beige played in 10 games for the Spinners hitting .351 in those games. He has been sent to The Greenville Drive in Low-A ball. Good luck to Garrett as he continues to make the climb up the Red Sox organization.

The Connecticut Tigers have gotten off to a rough start on the road in 2018. in fact, heading into their series in Lowell earlier this week, the Tigers were 0-8 away from Dodd Stadium. The Tigers are now 2-9 thanks to taking two-of-three from the Spinners and now boast a series win-loss record of 3-3.

The Tigers may also be one of the youngest team in this league thanks to having nine teenagers on the current roster. They have also added some 2018 Detroit Tigers draftees to this roster making them the last team in the NYPL to acquire players from this past June’s First-year Player Draft.

Mahoning Valley’s Tyler Freeman is having a good start to the season. He is second in the NYPL in hitting at .453. He is also second in hits with two and third in doubles with six. When you get on-base a lot, you have a chance to score runs. Freeman is second in that category with 13 and is fourth in slugging at .471. He leads in total bases with 37.

The Scrappers also have an arm to talk about and his name is Luis Oviedo. He has a 2-0 record with an ERA of under one so far this summer. His strikeout total of 27 ranks him second in the league. In 16 inning of work, Oviedo has allowed only five hits and issued only three walks. His batting average allowed of .093 (5 hits in 54 at-bats) is second, while he possesses the best so/9 IP ratio at 15.19. In those 16 innings pitched he has 27 strikeouts.

Jarren Duran of the Lowell Spinners is becoming a fixture at the top of Lowell’s lineup, and the move has paid off. He is the leader in triples with four, while also number one in caught stealing with three. He has been successful three times as well. Duran has played in ten of eleven games for the Spinners committing only two errors at second base. His batting average of .321 is second on the team.

Hudson Valleys pitching staff has the top team ERA in the league this holiday week at 2.69 in 150.1 innings pitched. The Renegades have given up a total of 61 runs, of which 45 have been earned. They have surrendered four home runs while punching out 143 batters and issuing 46 base on balls. The staff has already thrown two shutouts and has six saves so far.

That’s it for this week and will be back next week with more from the NYPL.
