Poetry in March Madness
March Madness
Brings so much sadness.
Teams lose, and other teams lose
And other teams lose.
Only one team wins this tournament.
They are ecstatic. The rest are bummed
That they are not ecstatic.
It’s all about cutting down the nets on Monday night.
To get there is a fight.
It’s just a sport, just a game,
But it’s important, just the same
It brings Americans together.
It lifts us up and brings us down.
It is life played out on the hardwood courts.
For years this has been our nation’s ultimate sport.
No one can forget the time Lorenzo Charles
Dunked the ball at the buzzer to
Lead NC State to the national championship.
His team had one last chance to win.
He had to catch the ball in mid-air and dunk
It or his team would lose.
The stakes were that high.
To our astonishment to this day,
Lorenzo made the big play.
His dunk changed the course of
March Madness history.
We were all there to see.
What shock and exhilaration could be.
There was then Villanova against Georgetown.
That tournament was Georgetown’s town.
Anyone who didn’t admit this was a clown.
But everything turned Villanova’s way.
Harold Jensen had his way
Making every big play.
He didn’t miss a shot.
Which to his team meant a lot.
Nova pulled off the upset for the ages
That is now recorded forever in the March Madness history pages.
March Madness is a cure-all and a curiosity;
A flash of sunlight, a dark night,
A basketball fight.
Tomorrow this fight continues
As the Sweet 16 dance takes place.
It’s basketball high drama.
It’s in your face.
Who will advance?
Who has a chance?
Will it be Loyola of Chicago shocking the world?
Will Nevada win?
Can they do it again?
What about Kentucky?
Will they get lucky?
Sixteen teams left
That’s all we have.
Two more weeks of March Madness
Two more weeks of sadness and gladness.
On Monday night it will end.
What new surprises will this year’s tournament send?
Tune in to March Madness, my friend.
