BC BASEBALL Shuts Out UNC Asheville as All Three Facets Shine
Pitchers strike out nine, Eagles tally season-high 17 hits and defense is perfect

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The Boston College baseball team turned in a complete-game effort, shutting out UNC Asheville, 8-0, on Tuesday evening at Greenwood Baseball Field. It marked the first shutout of the season for the Eagles (5-5) as the pitching staff combined for nine strikeouts with just five hits. Offensively, every starter logged at least one hit as BC tallied season-high 17 hits. The defense was perfect, not committing an error for the sixth time this season.

Sophomore RHP Matt Gill collected his first win of the season in his first start of the season. He threw 4.1 scoreless innings with three Ks. Redshirt freshman LHP Joey Walsh struck out a career-high five in 3.2 innings of relief work, allowing just two hits and one walk. Junior RHP Sean Hughes closed the door, pitching the ninth and striking out one.

Senior Jake Palomaki led the way at the plate for the Eagles, logging three hits. Sophomore Dante Baldelli and freshman Chris Galland both registered two RBIs on the afternoon while Galland and sophomore Jacob Yish tallied two doubles apiece.

  • Senior Jake Palomaki led the way with three hits. He doubled and scored a run.
  • Sophomore Brian Dempsey was 2-for-3 with a run and a walk. He has a hit in eight of the Eagles’ 10 games this season and one in 22 of the last 30 games played, dating back to last season.
  • In his first start of 2018, sophomore RHP Matt Gill threw 4.1 scoreless innings, allowing just three hits, three walks and struck out three.
  • Sophomore Jacob Yish was 2-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI.
  • Redshirt freshman LHP Joey Walsh threw 3.2 innings of scoreless relief as he allowed just two hits and one walk and a career-high five strikeouts.
  • Sophomore Jack Cunningham extended his hit streak to career-long five games with an RBI single.
  • Freshman Chris Galland recorded two doubles, two RBIs, two runs and stolen base. He extended his career-long hit streak to six games – the longest of the season for the Eagles – and in his five career starts, he is 10-for-19 with 10 runs, seven RBIs and five stolen bases.
  • Sophomore Dane Baldelli also had two RBIs on a 2-for-4 night with a run and walk.

  • The Eagles scored one in the second to take an early lead and three in the fifth to go up by four.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Eagles scored one in the second to take an early lead. Junior Jake Alu led off with a single to left center and moved up to third on two groundouts. Yish doubled to center to plate the first run of the game.
  • BC scored three in the fifth to take a 4-0 lead and chase starter RHP Danny Wilson from the game. Dempsey led off with an infield single and Palomaki followed with a double down the right-field line. Baldelli knocked both of them in with a base hit up the middle. After Baldelli advanced to second on the throw home, junior Gian Martellini singled to right to score the fourth run of the game.
  • The Eagles added two more in the seventh off Trey Jernigan. Redshirt junior Scott Braren doubled to center to start the inning and with one down, Galland smacked one to left for a double, scoring senior pinch runner Anthony Maselli. Galland stole third and came home when Jernigan’s throw was errant.
  • BC finished the scoring with two outs in the ninth off Kole Harris. Alu singled up the middle and Galland drove him in with a double to right center. Cunningham kept his hit streak alive with a chopper over the head of the UNCA first baseman, scoring Galland from first.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

  • It was the first-ever meeting between the two schools.
  • The team faced former BC pitching coach Scott Friedholm (2011-14), who is now leading the Bulldogs.
  • Yish made his first career start in right field and Cunningham his first career start at first base.
  • The 17 hit the Eagles recorded were the most on the season.
  • The last time the Eagles collected a team shutout was a 3-0 victory against Quinnipiac on May 13, 2017.
  • For the second time this season, every starter tallied at least one hit.
  • For the sixth time in 10 games, the Eagles did not commit an error.
