Braren Drives in Go-Ahead Run in Ninth as Eagles Pull Off Come-Back Victory
Dempsey logs career-high three RBIs on a 4-for-5 day

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – The Boston College baseball team rallied from a two-run deficit in the ninth inning to defeat Rutgers, 11-6, on Sunday afternoon at the final game of the Snowbird Classic. The Eagles (3-3) scored seven runs in the final frame to leave Port Charlotte, Fla., with a victory.
Sophomore Brian Dempsey had a career day, tying a career high with four hits and setting a new personal best with three RBIs. He has a hit in five of the six games in 2018. Junior Jake Alu was 4-for-5, also tying a career-high hit total, while freshman Chris Galland tallied two hits, including a double, with two RBIs in his first career start.
Junior RHP Thomas Lane picked up his first win of the season, throwing the final 1.1 innings without allowing a hit, run or walk. He struck out two. Freshman LHP Will Hesslink was perfect through two innings of relief, striking out one, in his first career appearance.
It was the first come-back win of the season for the Eagles. They tied a season high with 16 hits and logged a new season-high with 11 runs.

BC HIGHLIGHTS
  • Junior Jake Alu and sophomore Brian Dempsey led the way for the Eagles with 4-for-5 afternoons. They both tied career highs for hits while Dempsey logged a career-high three RBIs.
  • Dempsey has tallied at least one hit in five of the Eagles’ six games this season and in 19 of the last 26 games he has played in, dating back to last season.
  • Freshman Chris Galland made his first career start playing left field. He was 2-for-5 with two runs scored, logging his first two career RBIs and first career double.
  • In his first career appearance for the Eagles, freshman LHP Will Hesslink threw two scoreless innings of relief, retiring all six batters he faced and recording his first career strikeout.
  • Junior RHP Thomas Lane collected the win, throwing the final 1.1 innings and striking out two.
KEY PLAYS
  • Trailing by two heading in the ninth, BC scored seven runs on five hits, two walks, a hit batter and an error to take an 11-6 lead. With the bases loaded and no outs, junior Gian Martellini tied the game with a two-run single and redshirt junior Scott Braren put the Eagles ahead with a single up the middle.
  • Lane threw a scoreless ninth to seal the victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Scarlet Knights scored two in the first off senior starter RHP Brian Rapp. Nick Matera plated a runner from third with one down for the first run of the game and with the bases loaded, Luke Bowerbank hit a sacrifice fly to left. Rapp got a strikeout swinging to end the inning.
  • Rutgers added a run in the second. Rapp got two quick outs before allowing a double to deep center by Mike Nyisztor. Jawuan Harris knocked a hard-hit ball to second, which second baseman Dempsey fielded, but his throw to first was delayed, allowing Nyisztor to score.
  • The Eagles got on the board in the fourth. Martellini led off with a double off the fence in center. With two down, Galland brought him home with a double to left center. After a hit by pitch, Dempsey knocked one to left to score Galland and make it a one-run game. Dempsey was thrown out at second, ending the scoring threat.
  • Rutgers added three in the fifth. Harris led off with a single and Matera plated him with a double to left. After a hit batter, junior LHP Zach Stromberg replaced Rapp. A sac bunt moved the runners to second and third and Stromberg got a chopper to third. Third baseman Alu gunned down the runner going home for the second out. Junior RHP Sean Hughes came in the game and with the shift on, Kevin Welsh tripled to right, allowing both runners to cross the plate, giving RU a 6-2 lead. Hughes got a fly ball to end the inning.
  • BC got one run back in the sixth. Braren and sophomore Jack Cunningham logged back-to-back singles to start things off. Braren tagged up to third on a fly out and senior Anthony Maselli plated him with a sac fly to center. Dempsey singled up the middle to keep the inning alive but senior Jake Palomaki‘s line drive was caught by a diving first baseman to end the frame.
  • The Eagles scored seven runs in the ninth off four RU pitchers to take the 11-6 lead. They loaded the bases on two walks and a bunt single by Alu. Martellini singled to right center off LHP Eric Reardon to tie the game. Braren knocked one back up the middle to score Alu and give the Eagles the lead. New pitcher RHP Ryan Wares hit Cunningham to reload the bases and Galland beat out a chopper to short for a base hit. Two runs came in as RU shortstop Welsh overthrew the first-base bag. With runners on second and third, Dempsey singled to right center to plate two more before the fourth Rutgers hurler came into the game. RHP Serafino Brito got the final two outs to end the inning after BC batted around.
  • Lane finished the game for the Eagles. He allowed back-to-back, one-out walks but forced a 53 double play to seal the win.
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE
  • The Eagles improved to 8-16 all-time against Rutgers. The victory marked the first meeting between the two teams since 2005 when both schools were in the Big East.
  • BC is now 15-8 at the Snowbird Classic in the five years attended.
  • It marked the fourth straight game the Eagles did not commit an error.
  • In the three games over the weekend, all three opponents scored in the first inning against BC.
  • The Eagles tied a season high with 16 hits in the victory. They also recorded 16 hits in a 20-9 loss at Santa Clara on Feb. 17, outhitting the Broncos in the loss.
  • It was the most runs BC has scored this season.
