Landry Named to Walter Camp Player of the Year Watch List
Senior continues long list of preseason accolades

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. –
The Walter Camp Football Foundation has announced the names of 40 “players to watch” for its 2017 Player of the Year award, the nation’s fourth-oldest individual college football accolade.

Boston College senior defensive end Harold Landry, a 2016 Walter Camp Second Team All-America selection, was one of nine players on the 2017 watch list who have previously earned Walter Camp All-America honors.

In all, 30 schools and 10 conferences are represented on the list.

“We are proud to continue the great work of Walter Camp and recognize the best college football players in the nation,” Foundation president Michael Madera said. “This watch list is a great start to what is shaping up to be another exciting year of college football.”

The watch list will be narrowed to 10 semi-finalists in mid-November.  The 2017 Walter Camp Player of the Year recipient, which is voted on by the 130 NCAA Bowl Subdivision head coaches and sports information directors, will be announced on Thursday, December 7.  The winner will then receive his trophy at the Foundation’s 51st annual national awards banquet on January 13, 2018, in New Haven.

The honor is the latest for Landry, who was named to the Preseason All-ACC team last week and has been named to various preseason All-America teams.

Landry finished 2016 as the nation’s leader in sacks (16.5) and forced fumbles (7) on his way to earning All-America accolades from the Associated Press and Walter Camp Football Foundation. The North Carolina native was also fifth in the nation and second in the ACC with 22.0 tackles-for-loss. Landry set the Boston College single-season record with 16.5 sacks a year ago.

He was also a finalist for the Ted Hendricks Award in 2016, given annually to college football’s top defensive end.

Boston College returns 46 letter winners and 17 starters in 2017 after the Eagles won three consecutive games to close out the 2016 season, including a 36-30 win over Big Ten foe Maryland in the Quick Lane Bowl. It was the first bowl win for the Eagles since 2007 as BC went to the postseason for the third time in the previous four seasons.

BC opens the 2017 season Friday, Sept. 1 at Northern Illinois (9:30 p.m.) on CBS Sports Network. The Eagles open the 2017 home schedule on Saturday, Sept. 9 at 1 p.m. vs. Wake Forest (ACC Network Extra).

Season tickets are now available by visiting BCEagles.com or calling 617-552-4622 (GOBC).
