A no win situation has been created. The America East baseball tourney has been beset by rain since it began on Wednesday afternoon. It has made things difficult for teams, players and ground crew who have put in extra work to keep LeLacheur Park playable.

When they have been able to get going the games have been good.  Friday was no different as UMBC advanced in the winner’s bracket with a 3-2 win over Stony Brook.

Starting pitching was again the story, as the Retrievers got a solid outing from Senior Michael Austin, to go along with timely hitting to pick up the win.

UMBC got its offense rolling in the very first inning VS Stony Brook starter Junior Kevin Kerman. Leadoff hitter Andrew Casail took a Kerman 3-2 pitch and hit a slice fly ball down the RF line that clanked off the foul pole for a leadoff HR, his second of the year, 1-0 home team.

The Retrievers added to the lead in the fourth when Hunter Dolshun doubled to center field, his 12th of the year. After a walk to the next batter, Christian Torres stepped up to the plate and delivered a RBI single to left field. It was 2-0 UMBC and the RBI was Torres’ 24th of the year.

While his offense was giving him some runs to work with, Austin was dealing on the mound. He began his career as an outfielder and did not start pitching until his junior year. Yes, he is still learning how to pitch. On Friday, he put it to good use going 5.1 shutout innings giving up five hits with two walks and six K’s.

The Retrievers struck against Kernam in the fifth. Casail again got things started with a single to left field, part of a three-hit game for him. He would then steal second, his 11th of the season and moved to third on another single off the bat of Jamie Switalski. He would score on a sac fly off the bat of Hunter Dolshun his 34th run batted in. 3-0 UMBC.

Stony Brook began a late-game comeback in the seventh. With two outs against relief pitcher Connor Staskey, Toby Handley reached on an infield single and the next hitter, Brandon Janofsky, hit a ball to third base that was not handled by Torres. Handley raced around to score when the throw back into the infield was overthrown. 3-1 Retrievers.

The Seawolves got to within a run in the top of the eighth when Dylan Resk crushed a fastball off the Jumbotron in left field off Staskey for his 13th of the year. 3-2 UMBC.

It would be as close as they would get as Maryland-Baltimore County went back to their bullpen and called on Jacob Christian to close the game which he did with 1.2 innings of no-hit ball for his first save of the year. 3-2 the final score.

For Stony Brook, the loss means another game, this time against Maine to stay alive in this event. Maryland-Baltimore County returns to the diamond on Saturday morning to face Albany.

Austin win puts him at 4-2. Kernan goes to 4-1 and the save for Jacob Christian was his first.
