The football season is winding down in the SWAC. The East is still undecided even with Alcorn St leading the way at 4-0 in conference play. In the West, Southern is looking to lock up the division. Let’s take a look at this past week’s action and award winners.
Alabama A&M (5-4, 2-2) traveled to AW Mumford Stadium to take on Southern (5-4, 4-1) and it turned out to be a whale of a game. The teams went into the locker rooms at the half with the Jags up 14-7. The second half would be another story as both came out firing. Southern would eventually get the win 35-31 on the strength of their QB, Ladarius Skelton. The junior from Pine Bluff, Ark would account for four touchdowns. He had 34 carries for 238 yards rushing while also going 16-25 for 198 yards through the air with another two scores. That would be good enough to win him the Offensive Player of the Week Award. R-Sr. LB Calvin Lunkins had a big night with 13 tackles and helped his defense hold A&M to 71 yards rushing for Co-Defensive player of the Week honors. A&M RB, Abdul-Fatai Ibrahim would earn Co-Newcomer of the Week honors with 128 receiving yards and two touchdowns on seven receptions.
Other award winners were DeAndre Johnson for Co-Newcome of the Week. He passed for 351 yards going 21-40 with a touchdown. He also added 133 yards on the ground on 21 carries. The problem here is that Texas Southern lost their ninth game of the year and are still looking for their first win of the year. The game saw the Tigers amass 637 yards of offense but they also keep making mistakes that cost them. They keep getting killed by the penalties (9-97 yards) and the inability to sustain drives. This Saturday they are back in Houston looking to get win number one against Alabama St.
Other award winners were:
Co-Specialist: Hunter Hanson (Jr., K) of Alabama St made all three extra points and two field goals for nine points in his team’s 27-0 victory over Mississippi Valley St. The other winner was Josh Littles of Jackson St. He had a big 94-yard kickoff return near the end of the third quarter in his team’s 21-12 win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
Stay tuned next week as we come back and bring you more from the SWAC on NGSC Sports where we never stop.
