With the 2017 NY- Penn League season about to begin, the Lowell Spinners got ready by playing an exhibition game VS the Nashua Sliver Knights of the Future Collegiate Baseball League. The game was played in a six-inning format, with Spinners winning 10-3. The score is not important, what is that players got a chance to get out there and play under light game conditions.
Manager Iggy Suarez returns for his second campaign at the helm of the Spinners. Last season was a record-setting one for the franchise as they set a team-high in wins with 47, and made the playoffs.
With a new year comes a new team and challenges. Yes, there are some holdovers from 2016, but in this league with an emphasis on player development, anything is possible.
Sunday night players got their feet wet as they look ahead to Monday night’s opener VS Vermont. The offense was led by Victor Acosta with three hits and Imeldo Diaz also had a perfect night with a single and two walks.
On the mound, the Spinners use three hurlers, starting with Nick Duron. He went the first 3.2 innings. He would struggle early giving up all three Sliver Knights runs in the first two frames. His line for the night includes 7 hits, three earned runs, three K’s and a walk.
Since this is just a tune up his numbers do not matter. What does matter is that he got there and threw all his pitches, got a feel for the bump and his new digs for future starts.
Tonight they play for real. Lowell will send their 2016 first-round pick Jason Groome to the hill. He is here on a rehab stint with innings and pitches to be monitored by the coaching staff. If all goes well for Groome, he will return to the Greenville Drive soon.
First pitch VS Vermont is set for 6:35 PM.
