The Tampa Tarpons grabbed an early series advantage Tuesday night. Tampa defeated the Clearwater Threshers 2-0 in Game One. The game opened the Florida State League West Division Series. The Tarpons now lead the best-of-three series 1-0. They also need one more win to advance. However, Clearwater will get another chance Thursday night. The Threshers will host Game Two at BayCare Ballpark. First pitch comes at 6:30 p.m. on September 10. The Tarpons entered the postseason with the FSL’s best regular-season record. Tampa finished 75-48 during the regular season. Clearwater finished with a 74-55 record.
Etheridge Controls the Game
J.T. Etheridge delivered the biggest performance for Tampa. The right-hander made his postseason debut against the Threshers. He worked five scoreless innings and allowed only one hit. Etheridge also struck out seven batters during his outing. His performance earned him the win in Game One. Etheridge recently earned Florida State League Pitcher of the Week honors. He continued that strong run against Clearwater. The Threshers struggled to generate consistent offense. They collected only three hits throughout the entire game. Clearwater did create a few opportunities. The Threshers put their first two hitters aboard during the fifth inning. However, Tampa escaped without allowing a run. Clearwater created another opportunity during the eighth inning. Again, the Threshers could not push a runner past third base. That proved costly in a two-run game.
Tampa Strikes First
The Tarpons wasted little time creating pressure. Yostin Peña started the bottom of the first inning with a single. Paul Gutierrez-Contreras followed with a double. Peña scored on the play, giving Tampa a 1-0 lead. Tampa added another run in the third inning. Luis Escudero opened the inning with a double. Peña then delivered another important hit. His RBI single scored Escudero and doubled Tampa’s advantage. Peña finished the night with two hits and one RBI. He also scored one of Tampa’s two runs. Meanwhile, Clearwater’s pitching staff kept the game close. Brad Pacheco followed Nestor Cortes and provided five strong innings. Pacheco allowed one run on three hits. He also struck out five batters and walked four. His outing gave Clearwater’s offense opportunities to rally. Unfortunately for the Threshers, those opportunities never became runs.
Clearwater Heads Home
Now, the series shifts to Clearwater. The Threshers will return to BayCare Ballpark for Game Two. They must win Thursday to keep their season alive. The home crowd could provide an important boost. Clearwater finished the second half with a 34-29 record. Tampa finished that portion of the season at 43-20. Still, playoff baseball can change quickly. The Threshers need better production at the plate. They also need another strong pitching performance. Tampa already showed how dangerous its pitching staff can become.
The Tarpons held Clearwater scoreless from the opening pitch through the final out. Game Two also gives Clearwater a chance to reset. The Threshers know exactly what they need to accomplish. They must find ways to create pressure against Tampa’s pitching. At the same time, Clearwater cannot afford to give Tampa early opportunities. The Tarpons scored both runs through timely hitting. They also received excellent work from their pitching staff.
Game Two Could Decide Everything
Thursday’s matchup carries enormous importance for both teams. A Tampa victory would end the series immediately. Clearwater, however, can force a deciding Game Three with a win. If necessary, Game Three will take place Friday night at BayCare Ballpark. The scheduled first pitch remains 6:30 p.m. For Clearwater, the formula remains simple. The Threshers need timely hitting and another quality pitching effort. They also need to capitalize when runners reach scoring position. Meanwhile, Tampa enters Game Two with plenty of confidence. The Tarpons already grabbed the first punch in this series. Now, Clearwater gets the opportunity to answer.
Game One belonged to Tampa. Game Two gives Clearwater its chance to fight back. The Threshers will need their offense to wake up quickly. They also need BayCare Ballpark to become a major advantage. With their season on the line, Thursday night should bring plenty of playoff intensity. First pitch arrives at 6:30 p.m. on September 10. The Florida State League West Division Series now sits one win away from a dramatic conclusion.
