After several years of rumors and speculation, Giannis Antetokounmpo has finally been traded. Reported by Shams Charania, the Milwaukee Bucks traded their now former franchise superstar to the Miami Heat. The trade goes as follows:
Miami Heat receive:
- Giannis Antetokounmpo
- Bobby Portis
Milwaukee Bucks receive:
- Tyler Herro
- Kel’el Ware
- Jamie Jaquez Jr.
- Kasparas Jakucionis
- 3 first-round picks (including no.13 in the 2026 Draft)
- 1 pick swap
- 1 second round pick
Giannis Antetokunmpo’s time with the Milwaukee Buck has come to an end after 13 seasons. What started as unknown project in the 2013 NBA Draft turned into one of the best forwards of all-time. In his 13 seasons in Milwaukee, Giannis would make All-NBA nine times, All-Defensive team five times, would be a 10-time All-Star, two-time MVP, and most importantly, he would bring the Bucks their first championship in 50 years in 2021.
Following the 2021 championship, Giannis and the Bucks would have nothing but bad luck, being eliminated in the second round in 2022, being eliminated in the first round in 2023, 2024, and 2025, and missing the playoffs in 2026. The Bucks last three playoff runs would see significant injuries to both Giannis and other members of the roster.
In his last season with the Bucks, Giannis would play a career-low 36 games, dealing with several injuries throughout the season. Giannis finishes his Bucks tenure as one of, if not the greatest Buck of all time. Giannis leads the Bucks in games played (895), minutes played, points (21531), field, goals, free throws, rebounds, blocks, assists, and triple doubles.
Now a member of the Miami Heat, Giannis has one guaranteed year left for the 2026-27 season, and a $62 million player option for the 2027-28 season. He joins Bam Adebayo and Andrew Wiggins as the Miami Heat look to be championship contenders once again. It is unknown if a trio of Giannis, Bam Adebayo, and Andrew Wiggins can compete in the Eastern Conference, but it is guaranteed the trio will at least be a legitimate playoff contender after Miami would miss the playoffs in 2026. For Miami, they finally land a superstar after missing out on multiple superstars over the last handful of years. After landing Jimmy Butler in the summer of 2019, Miami would miss out on Kevin Durant twice, Damian Lillard, Bradley Beal, and more.
For the Bucks, the receive a haul of players and picks as they begin the rebuild many thought was inevitable the last couple of seasons. Tyler Herro, a former All-Star and guaranteed 20+ PPG scorer tops the Bucks haul, but it is unknown if the sharpshooter will stay in Milwaukee, or if he’ll be rerouted somewhere else for more draft capital as he was linked to several teams including the Detroit Pistons. Kel’el Ware and Jamie JaquezJ Jr. are two young players full of promise to add to a rebuilding Bucks roster.
The most important part of the trade for Milwaukee will be the draft picks. The first-round draft picks include no.13 in Tuesday’s 2026 draft, Miami’s pick in 2031, and in Miami’s pick in 2033. The pick swap will be in 2030.
The Giannis trade goes far beyond Milwaukee and Maimi, as numerous other teams were linked to Antetokounmpo, the biggest team being the Boston Celtics. Boston would be reported as one of the finalists for Antetokounmpo, with 2024 Finals MVP Jaylen Brown being the focus of the Celtics offer for Giannis. Now missing out on Giannis, there are questions of what will happen with Brown and Boston as it was clear he was on the trade block for a Bucks trade. Several other teams that missed out on Giannis include Golden State, Minnesota, Cleveland and both the Los Angeles Lakers and Clippers. With the Giannis Antetokounmpo domino falling, it is expected that several other big names will be on the move as a result. Boston may be forced into trading Jaylen Brown after the failed trade with the Bucks, Miami itself will have to add other pieces to ensure the Heat are legitimate contenders, and other teams across the league will begin to pivot to plan b and plan c options as they missed out on Antetokounmpo.
