The University of South Florida landed one of its biggest recruiting commitments in recent years. Four-star quarterback Kevin Verpaele announced his commitment to the Bulls after decommitting from Pittsburgh. The decision gives USF a significant win on the recruiting trail and highlights the momentum building under new head coach Brian Hartline.
Verpaele ranks among the top quarterback prospects in the 2027 recruiting class. According to the Rivals Industry Rankings, he stands as the No. 22 quarterback nationally in his class. His commitment also shows that USF can successfully compete against Power Four programs for elite talent.
The Merritt Island High School standout earned praise from recruiting analysts throughout the evaluation process. Rivals Director of Scouting and Rankings Charles Power spoke highly of Verpaele after watching him perform at the Rivals Camp in Miami earlier this year.
Power noted that Verpaele delivered the strongest overall quarterback performance at the camp. He praised the quarterback’s live arm, ability to drive the football downfield, and consistent mechanics. Power also highlighted Verpaele’s tight spirals and ability to repeat his throwing motion with little variation during drills.
Verpaele brings impressive production to USF. During his junior season, he completed 191 of 302 passes. That completion rate reached 63.2 percent. He threw for 2,714 yards while recording 27 touchdown passes against nine interceptions.
In addition, Verpaele made an impact as a runner. He carried the ball 95 times for 480 yards and added four rushing touchdowns. His dual-threat ability makes him a dangerous weapon both inside and outside the pocket.
The commitment carries extra significance because of the family’s history with the program. Verpaele’s father, Kevin Verpaele Sr., played quarterback for USF from 2000 through 2003. Meanwhile, his uncle, Danny Verpaele, played defensive back for the Bulls from 2004 through 2008.
Today, Danny Verpaele serves on the USF coaching staff as defensive backs coach. His connection to the program helped strengthen the family’s ties to the university. However, the recruitment involved much more than family history.
According to On3, quarterbacks coach Mike Hartline played a major role in securing the commitment. Hartline and the coaching staff continued pursuing Verpaele even after he pledged to Pittsburgh last fall. Their persistence eventually paid off.
A visit to the USF campus last weekend appeared to solidify Verpaele’s decision. Soon afterward, he announced his commitment to the Bulls. The coaching staff successfully convinced one of Florida’s top quarterback prospects to stay close to home.
The victory also serves as an early statement for Brian Hartline’s tenure. Hartline built a reputation as one of college football’s best recruiters during his time at Ohio State. Still, some observers questioned whether he could attract elite prospects at a Group of Five program.
This commitment provides a strong answer. USF beat several notable programs for Verpaele’s services. Along with Pittsburgh, he held offers from Florida, Virginia Tech, and Rutgers. Winning a recruiting battle against schools from major conferences demonstrates the growing appeal of the Bulls program.
Furthermore, Verpaele’s commitment continues a productive recruiting stretch for USF. Earlier, the Bulls secured a pledge from safety Jaiziah Battle of The First Academy in Orlando.
Battle selected USF over Boston College, Memphis, Florida Atlantic, and North Texas. According to 247Sports, Danny Verpaele served as the lead recruiter in Battle’s commitment.
Together, the commitments from Verpaele and Battle strengthen the foundation of USF’s future recruiting classes. Both players bring strong credentials and chose the Bulls despite significant competition.
Most importantly, Verpaele gives USF a potential cornerstone quarterback for the future. His passing numbers, athletic ability, and leadership traits make him one of the most important commitments in the program’s recent history. As a result, the Bulls continue building momentum under Hartline while showing they can compete for elite talent across the state of Florida.
