INDIANAPOLIS — The machine keeps rolling. In a physical, high-stakes battle at Lucas Oil Stadium on Saturday night, the UConn Huskies proved why they are the most feared program in March. Despite significant scoring droughts and a desperate late-game surge from the Fighting Illini, UConn secured a 71–62 victory to advance to their third National Championship game in the last four seasons.
The win extends UConn’s (34–5) remarkable streak to 19 consecutive tournament victories in the Sweet 16 or later rounds, setting up a titanic Monday night showdown against Michigan.
The Freshman “Knockout”
While the veterans provided the muscle, it was freshman sensation Braylon Mullins who provided the dagger. With under a minute remaining and Illinois having cut a once 14-point lead down to just four, Mullins—playing just miles from his hometown of Greenfield, Indiana—drilled a catch-and-shoot three-pointer with 52 seconds left. The shot pushed the lead to 66–59 and effectively broke the Illini’s spirit.
Mullins finished with 15 points, continuing his legendary tournament run after his game-winner against Duke in the Elite Eight.
Dominance in the Paint
UConn’s interior presence was the difference-maker. Tarris Reed Jr. led the Huskies with a monster double-double, recording 17 points and 11 rebounds. His ability to finish at the rim and control the glass allowed UConn to weather two massive scoring droughts—one nearly six minutes long in the first half and another over six minutes in the second.
Though star forward Alex Karaban struggled with his shot (1-of-8), his leadership was vital as he tied the record for the second-most career March Madness victories by a player with 18.
Illinois’ Valiant Comeback
For Illinois (28–9), the night was defined by a refusal to go quietly. After trailing 57–43 with under ten minutes to play, the Illini went on a 10–0 run to get within four points at 57–53.
- Keaton Wagler: The freshman guard was spectacular, leading all scorers with 20 points and 8 rebounds. He became the first freshman since Derrick Rose in 2008 to post a 20/8 stat line in a National Semifinal.
- Tomislav Ivišić: Provided the secondary punch with 16 points and 7 rebounds, including the three-pointer that gave Illinois their only lead of the game (22–21) midway through the first half.
However, the Illini’s shooting ultimately betrayed them. Known for their high-octane offense, they were held to just 34% from the field and a cold 6-of-26 (23%) from three-point range.
Monday Night for History
With the win, Dan Hurley’s squad moves within one victory of their sixth national title. A win on Monday would break a tie with North Carolina and move UConn into sole possession of third place all-time, trailing only UCLA and Kentucky.
