WNBA Recaps: Mystics Pull off Comeback, Dream Roll Past Mercury, Liberty and Sky Get Home Wins

Wednesday night in the WNBA saw two 20-point comebacks on the road, while the home teams held court. The playoff grind in here and for some teams, time is of the essence.

Washington Mystics 96, Dallas Wings 92

At CareFirst Arena, the Washington Mystics pulled off one of the most remarkable comebacks of the season, erasing a 20-point second-half deficit to edge the Dallas Wings 96–92. The victory extended Washington’s winning streak to five games—their first five-game in-season winning streak since 2019.

Dallas appeared to be in complete control late in the third quarter, holding a commanding 19-point cushion with under two minutes remaining in the frame. However, Washington mounted a furious fourth-quarter charge, executing a 35–12 game-ending run that caught the Wings completely off guard. Shakira Austin was an absolute force for the Mystics, recording a dominant 27 points and 13 rebounds. Her interior scoring and key late-game defensive stops fueled Washington’s closing surge.

Rookie Cotie McMahon provided a massive spark with 18 points and 3 assists, while guard Georgia Amoore drained four three-pointers en route to 12 points and 5 assists. The Wings got strong performances across their starting unit, but late turnovers and fatigue in the fourth quarter led to their third consecutive blown double-digit second-half lead.

Atlanta Dream 96, Phoenix Mercury 82

The Atlanta Dream continued their hot stretch at Gateway Center Arena, building a 20-point second-half lead and rolling to a 96–82 victory over the Phoenix Mercury. The Dream have now won six of their last seven games.

Rhyne Howard delivered a masterclass performance, pouring in 23 points and dishing out 8 assists while knocking down five three-pointers. Allisha Gray was nearly perfect early, scoring 17 of her 20 points in the first half on 7-of-8 shooting to give Atlanta a 54–47 halftime lead.

Point guard Jordin Canada made franchise history by setting Atlanta’s single-season assist record (227), surpassing Layshia Clarendon’s 2017 mark. Meanwhile, Angel Reese secured her 21st double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Kelsey Plum scored 19 points in her first start for Phoenix after being traded from Los Angeles, while Alyssa Thomas tallied 17 points and DeWanna Bonner pulled down an 11-point, 11-rebound double-double in the loss.

Chicago Sky 95, Los Angeles Sparks 88

At Wintrust Arena, the Chicago Sky locked down defensively down the stretch to outlast the visiting Los Angeles Sparks 95–88 in a fast-paced, high-scoring contest. Kamila Cardoso finished with 15 points and 7 rebounds, while Natasha Cloud and Jacy Sheldon put in 15 apiece.

Chicago controlled the paint and capitalized on second-chance opportunities, shooting 53% from the field to keep the Sparks at bay throughout the second half. The Sky’s ball movement led to 28 team assists, creating high-percentage looks inside and open perimeter shots whenever Los Angeles attempted to collapse on the interior. Playing short-handed following recent roster shifts, Los Angeles stayed competitive behind perimeter shooting (9-for-20 from deep), but was ultimately undone by late fouls and Chicago’s conversion at the charity stripe.

New York Liberty 92, Seattle Storm 86

At Barclays Center, the New York Liberty held off a late perimeter push from the Seattle Storm to claim a 92–86 victory in front of their home crowd. A much-needed win for a team still trying to get their footing this late into the season. Breann Stewart led the way with 29 points and 8 rebounds, while the starting lineup all scored in double figures.

Despite facing lineup adjustments, New York relied on sharp ball movement (25 team assists) and efficient free-throw shooting (19-for-21, 90.5%) to close out Seattle in the final two minutes. Seattle stayed within striking distance through efficient interior scoring and transition points, but New York’s timely defensive stops prevented the Storm from taking a lead in the fourth quarter.
