The first two tickets to the 2026 Final Four in Indianapolis were punched on Saturday, as the Elite Eight kicked off with a mix of historic breakthroughs and intra-conference dominance. While one game saw a long-standing drought end for a desert powerhouse, the other proved that a lower seed’s magic eventually runs into a wall of familiarity.
Here is the recap of Saturday’s Elite Eight action.
West Regional (San Jose, CA)
No. 1 Arizona 79, No. 2 Purdue 64
For the first time in 25 years, the Arizona Wildcats are headed back to the Final Four. Tommy Lloyd’s squad used a suffocating defensive performance in the second half to dismantle the Boilermakers and end years of tournament heartbreak.
- The Peat Factor: Freshman sensation Koa Peat was named the West Region’s Most Outstanding Player after a dominant 20-point performance. He became only the sixth freshman in NCAA history to score 20+ points in both the Sweet 16 and Elite Eight of the same tournament.
- The Turnaround: Purdue controlled the first half, leading 38–31 at the break. However, Arizona opened the second half on a blistering 15–5 run, led by Jaden Bradley and Anthony Dell’Orso. Purdue, usually an offensive juggernaut, was held to its second-lowest point total of the season, shooting just 38% from the field.
- The Ending: The loss marks the end of an era for Purdue’s senior trio of Braden Smith, Fletcher Loyer, and Trey Kaufman-Renn, who were unable to return to the title game after their 2024 run.
South Regional (Louisville, KY)
No. 3 Illinois 71, No. 9 Iowa 59
In an All-Big Ten showdown for a spot in the Final Four, the Fighting Illini proved too physical for the tournament’s favorite Cinderella. Iowa’s historic run as a No. 9 seed—which included an upset of No. 1 Florida—finally came to a halt against a disciplined Illinois defense.
- The Defense: Illinois focused on neutralizing the Hawkeyes’ perimeter shooting, holding Iowa to 38% from the field. The Illini controlled the glass and the tempo, preventing the track-meet style of play Iowa prefers.
- Balanced Attack: Illinois relied on a balanced scoring effort to pull away in the second half, maintaining a double-digit lead for the final eight minutes of the game.
- Moving On: With this victory, Illinois returns to the Final Four for the first time since 2005, continuing the Big Ten’s strong showing in the 2026 bracket.
