The “McCollum Effect” has officially reached a fever pitch. On Sunday night, the No. 9 seed Iowa Hawkeyes pulled off the biggest shocker of the tournament so far, dethroning the top-seeded and reigning national champion Florida Gators 73–72 in Tampa.
In his first season at the helm, head coach Ben McCollum has led the Hawkeyes to their first Sweet 16 appearance since 1999, ending a 27-year drought and proving that his Division II championship pedigree translates perfectly to the biggest stage in sports.
The Shot Heard ‘Round Iowa City
The game will be forever remembered for its heart-stopping final 10 seconds. Trailing 72–70 after Florida’s Isaiah Brown split a pair of free throws, Iowa faced the daunting task of going the length of the floor against the Gators’ elite full-court pressure.
- The Setup: Iowa broke the press with ease as Bennett Stirtz (13 points, 5 assists) sprinted into the frontcourt. As the Florida defense collapsed on the star point guard, he fired a pass to the right corner.
- The Dagger: Sophomore forward Alvaro Folgueiras didn’t hesitate, catching the ball in rhythm and burying a corner three-pointer with 4.5 seconds remaining to put Iowa up by one.
- The Final Stand: Florida’s Xaivian Lee attempted a desperate baseline-to-baseline drive, but his last-second pass was deflected as the buzzer sounded, igniting a wild celebration at Benchmark International Arena.

Outfighting the Giants
Florida entered the game as the nation’s best rebounding team, but Iowa refused to be bullied in the paint.
- Winning the Boards: The Hawkeyes played the Gators to a 27–27 draw on the glass, effectively neutralizing Florida’s size advantage.
- Neutralizing the DPoY: Iowa’s defensive scheme completely erased SEC Defensive Player of the Year Rueben Chinyelu, who finished with 0 points and 1 rebound in 19 foul-plagued minutes.
- Paint Presence: Despite the Gators’ length, Iowa outscored Florida in the paint 32–30, setting a physical tone from the opening tip.
The “McCollum Way”
The win is a massive validation for Ben McCollum, who made the jump from Northwest Missouri State this past offseason. Bringing Stirtz and three other players with him, McCollum has instilled a “blue-collar” identity that has transformed the program in less than a year.
“March is for the dreamers, and there’s no better dreamer than us,” Folgueiras said after the game. “We’re the only ones who believed in us, and it’ll probably stay that way.”
What’s Next: An All-Border Battle
The Hawkeyes (23–12) now head to Houston for the South Region semifinals. They will face a familiar foe in the No. 4 seed Nebraska Cornhuskers on Thursday night, March 26. With the defending champions out of the way, the path to the Final Four in North Texas has never looked more open for the “Cardiac Hawks.”
