A League of Their Own, Reimagined: Inside the Historic Debut of the WPBL

For more than 70 years, young girls with a passion for baseball reached a familiar, frustrating wall: play softball or stop playing altogether. While women’s sports have seen unprecedented growth across basketball, soccer, and hockey, professional hardball remained an elusive dream for female athletes in North America. Enter the WPBL.

The launching of the Women’s Professional Baseball League (WPBL) marks a groundbreaking shift. Co-founded by baseball trailblazer Dr. Justine Siegal and entrepreneur Keith Stein, the WPBL isn’t just an exhibition—it’s the first sanctioned professional women’s baseball league in the United States since the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL) folded in 1954.

The Inaugural Franchises

The WPBL launched with four flagship teams representing major sports markets. Developed in partnership with creative branding agency Arrivals + Departures, each team’s name and identity honors pioneering American women who broke boundaries:

San Francisco Firebells: Named in honor of Lillie Hitchcock Coit, a 19th-century volunteer firefighter who defied traditional social conventions.
Los Angeles Queens: Inspired by Lizzie Murphy, known as the “Queen of the Diamond,” who in 1922 became the first woman to play against Major League Baseball players.
Boston Hunters: Named for Dr. Harriot Kezia Hunt, a 19th-century suffragette and one of the first female medical practitioners in the United States.
New York Heights: Sporting a sleek blue and teal color scheme, the Heights honor civil rights icons and NYC’s rich history of women’s leadership.

The Central Hub: Robin Roberts Stadium

While the franchises carry the names of major metropolitan areas, the inaugural season utilizes a single, centralized site: Robin Roberts Stadium in Springfield, Illinois.

Hosting all four teams in a single neutral venue during a condensed seven-week summer season allows the league to establish fan engagement, control operational costs, and streamline national broadcasting logistics. The setup features a four-week regular season, an All-Star showcase, and a two-week postseason to crown the first champion.

The Hope for the Future

The WPBL is built for longevity. Supported by an advisory board that includes former AAGPBL legend Maybelle Blair as Honorary Chair, the league aims to build a sustainable pipeline.

Future plans already include expanding the league to six or eight franchises and transitioning teams into their home markets. More than anything, the WPBL ensures that the next generation of young girls pitching in Little League won’t have to wonder if there is a place for them in professional baseball—they’ll know the pathway exists.
