For the first time since the 2020-21 season, the UMBC Retrievers (20-8, 13-2 AE) are the undisputed regular-season champions of the America East Conference. The title was officially secured last Saturday afternoon at the Kennedy Family Athletic Center in Lowell, MA, as the Retrievers dismantled the UMass Lowell River Hawks in an 84–60 statement win.
This marks UMBC’s fifth regular-season championship at the Division I level and their fourth as a member of the America East (supplemented by a Northeast Conference title in 1999). This 20-win campaign is the program’s sixth in its D-I history and the first since the 2018-19 season. As they prepare to face NJIT on the road this Tuesday night, they carry an eight-game winning streak—their longest since 2020-21. A victory on Tuesday would give them nine straight for the first time since the legendary 2007-08 season.
Defying the Polls
To understand the magnitude of this run, one only needs to look back at the preseason: UMBC was picked to finish seventh in the conference poll. The Retrievers have spent the last four months proving exactly how little those projections matter.
Several statistical pillars have supported this championship run:
- The Charity Stripe: UMBC has dominated opponents at the free-throw line, outscoring them 231–131 during this stretch. They lead the league in free-throw percentage (75.5%, ranking 97th nationally), while opponents shoot a dismal 63% against them.
- Margin of Victory: During the current eight-game streak, six of UMBC’s wins have been by double figures, boasting a +12.4 PPG scoring margin.
- Defensive Identity: They are holding opponents to just 40% shooting from the field. On Saturday, they stifled UMass Lowell to a 35.8% clip (24-of-67).
- Balanced Scoring: Five Retrievers are currently averaging double figures, led by junior guard Ace Valentine at 13.4 PPG.
The Road to the Big Dance Runs Through Baltimore
By clinching the regular-season title, UMBC has secured home-court advantage throughout the Air Force Reserve America East Tournament. Any team looking to punch a ticket to the NCAA Tournament will likely have to do it at Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena.
The postseason field is largely set, though seeding battles remain for the final few spots:
- The Top Four: UMBC, Vermont, NJIT, and UMass Lowell have secured the rights to host quarterfinal games.
- The Odd Man Out: The Binghamton Bearcats will miss the tournament after finishing in last place.
- The Schedule: * Quarterfinals: Saturday, March 7 (at the home of the higher seeds).
- Semifinals: Tuesday, March 10.
- Championship Saturday: March 14 (Winner receives the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament).
It is a thrilling time for college basketball fans in the Northeast. With the bracket set to go live after Tuesday’s finales, make sure to find a tournament game near you this weekend.
Next week, we will return with an in-depth preview of the two Semifinal matchups as the path to the Big Dance narrows.
