The Major League Baseball Draft has officially concluded, and while teams are busy signing their 20 rounds of selections, the opportunity to go pro doesn’t end there. Non-drafted college free agents also get the chance to realize their professional dreams once the draft wraps up. Two such players hail right from the Boston College baseball program. Left-handed pitcher A.J. Colarusso and outfielder Jack Toomey both officially signed minor league contracts with the New York Mets.
A.J. Colarusso: A Record-Breaking Workhorse on the Mound
Colarusso capped off his Boston College career with a record-setting campaign. Serving as the Eagles’ trusted Friday night starter during conference play, the Leominster, Mass., native set a program record with 50 career starts. He also etched his name near the top of the BC history books, finishing fourth all-time in innings pitched (243) and sixth in career strikeouts (213).
Colarusso broke the career starts record on April 17 against Duke in memorable fashion, spinning a complete game in a seven-inning contest while allowing just one run on three hits with four strikeouts.
During his stellar senior season, he posted career bests across the board:
- Innings Pitched: 83.0
- Strikeouts: 77
- Wins: 5
- Opponent Batting Average: .276
Colarusso became the first member of the 2026 Eagles team to sign a professional contract.
Jack Toomey: An Offensive Powerhouse at the Plate
Shortly after Colarusso put pen to paper, outfielder Jack Toomey joined his teammate in signing with Queens. Toomey delivered an outstanding, highly productive season at the plate, starting 49 of 50 total games for the Eagles.
Toomey tied a BC single-season record by launching six triples, while also leading the team with a .445 on-base percentage.
Toomey’s 2026 Statistical Profile:
- Batting Average: .316 (4th on team)
- Hits & Stolen Bases: 55 hits, 18 steals on 19 attempts (both 4th on team)
- Extra-Base Power: 14 doubles (3rd on team), .562 Slugging, .997 OPS
- Runs Scored: 52 (3rd on team)
Defensively, Toomey was just as dependable in the outfield. He posted a .990 fielding percentage, committing only a single error across 100 chances with 98 putouts.
