Summer baseball provides a vital bridge for collegiate players to sharpen their skills and log valuable innings before fall ball kicks off in September. For the UMass Lowell River Hawks, the offseason is anything but a break. A total of 15 members of this past spring’s roster are scattered across various premier wooden-bat leagues to get extra development before returning to campus.
This edition of the tracker focuses on the prestigious Cape Cod Baseball League and the Futures Collegiate Baseball League (FCBL).
The Cape Cod Baseball League
Sean O’Leary (INF) — Harwich Mariners
Sean O’Leary stands as the lone River Hawk representing the program out on the Cape this summer. Showing off excellent defensive versatility, O’Leary has split his time across both corner infield positions for the Mariners.
- At the Plate: Through 13 games, O’Leary is batting .244 with a .358 on-base percentage and a .289 slugging percentage (.647 OPS). In 45 at-bats, he has collected 11 hits, 4 runs scored, 7 RBIs, and 2 doubles. He has showcased solid plate discipline with 8 walks against 12 strikeouts, and he remains a perfect 2-for-2 in stolen base attempts.
- First Base Defense: O’Leary has made 7 appearances (6 starts) at first base, where he has recorded 3 assists and turned 7 double plays while committing just one error.
- Third Base Defense: Over at the hot corner, he has logged 4 starts, picking up 2 assists, turning 1 double play, and committing 2 errors.
Futures Collegiate Baseball League (FCBL)
Westfield Starfires
- Tyler Dunlea (RHP): Serving exclusively as a starting pitcher for the Starfires, Dunlea has logged 5 starts this summer, pitching his way to a 1-2 record. Across 21.0 innings of work, he has surrendered 26 hits, 16 runs (15 earned), and 10 walks, while racking up 19 strikeouts. He currently carries a 6.43 ERA and a 1.71 WHIP.
Lowell Spinners
The hometown Spinners feature a trio of River Hawks pitchers working through their summer development:
- Jake Zawalsky (RHP): Zawalsky has been a versatile arm for Lowell, making 7 appearances (2 starts) and successfully securing a save. Over 22.2 innings, he has given up 22 hits and 14 runs (9 earned) with 12 walks and 18 strikeouts, generating a 1.52 WHIP and an 0-1 record.
- Chris Kluber (RHP): Serving primarily out of the bullpen with one start in his 6 appearances, Kluber has had a challenging summer stretch. In 12.0 innings, he has allowed 23 hits, 19 runs (17 earned), and 8 walks while striking out 12. He currently holds an 0-2 record, a 12.08 ERA, and a 2.46 WHIP.
- Seamus Scott (LHP): Scott has seen limited action on the bump for the Spinners so far. Through 2 appearances, he has allowed 4 hits, 4 earned runs, and 6 walks, with 2 strikeouts, over a brief sample size, resulting in an 18.00 ERA and a 5.00 WHIP.
Worcester Bravehearts
- Brayden Cali (UTL): Cali has carved out a utility role for the Bravehearts, flashing great speed on the basepaths through 20 games. While his bat is looking to find its rhythm—hitting .173 and slugging .192 (9-for-52 with one double and 10 total bases)—his eye at the plate has kept him on base. Cali has drawn 13 walks to power a strong .363 on-base percentage, translating those opportunities into 14 runs scored and 5 RBIs. He has also been highly aggressive on the move, swiping 8 stolen bases despite striking out 21 times.
