The Philadelphia 76ers’ championship aspirations took a massive hit this weekend as the NBA announced a 25-game suspension for superstar forward Paul George. The league officially handed down the ban on Saturday, January 31, 2026, for a violation of the NBA/NBPA Anti-Drug Program.
The suspension is effective immediately, meaning George was sidelined for Saturday night’s 124–114 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans.
The “Improper Medication” Explanation
In a statement released via ESPN shortly after the announcement, George took full accountability while offering context for the positive test. He attributed the violation to a mistake made while seeking treatment for his mental health.
“Over the past few years, I’ve discussed the importance of mental health, and in the course of recently seeking treatment for an issue of my own, I made the mistake of taking an improper medication. I take full responsibility for my actions and apologize to the Sixers organization, my teammates, and the Philly fans.” — Paul George
While the NBA did not disclose the specific substance, a 25-game ban under the current Collective Bargaining Agreement typically indicates a first-time violation for a performance-enhancing drug or a specific prohibited stimulant.
The Financial and Competitive Toll
The timing of the suspension is particularly brutal for Philadelphia, as the February 5th trade deadline is just days away.
- Salary Loss: George will forfeit approximately $11.7 million of his $51.7 million salary this season
- Luxury Tax Relief: Interestingly, the suspension provides the Sixers with a $5.9 million luxury tax credit. This move single-handedly drops Philly from $7 million over the tax line to just $1.3 million over, potentially changing their strategy for the trade deadline.
- The Return Date: If the Sixers play as scheduled, George is eligible to return on March 25, 2026, for a home game against the Chicago Bulls. This would leave him only 10 regular-season games to ramp up for the playoffs.
How the Sixers Survive Without “PG-13”
The 76ers currently sit in 6th place in the Eastern Conference (27–21). While Tyrese Maxey (29.4 PPG) and Joel Embiid (25.7 PPG) are carrying the scoring load, George’s absence creates a void that is difficult to fill on the wings.
The Rotation Shift:
- Kelly Oubre Jr. and Dominick Barlow are expected to see a significant uptick in minutes and starts.
- Defensive Impact: The Sixers are a vastly better defensive team with George on the floor (110.1 defensive rating) versus off (114.9).
- The Standings: With only a one-and-a-half-game lead over the Orlando Magic and a two-game lead over the Miami Heat, the Sixers risk falling into the Play-In Tournament if they cannot maintain their current pace over the next seven weeks.
Key Dates to Watch
- Feb 5: NBA Trade Deadline (Will Philly buy help to bridge the gap?)
- March 25: Paul George’s earliest possible return date vs. Chicago.
- April 12: End of the 2025–26 NBA Regular Season.
