WEST LAFAYETTE, IN — The college basketball world was shaken on Saturday afternoon as the No. 10 Iowa State Cyclones delivered a stunning and dominant performance, crushing the previously undefeated No. 1 Purdue Boilermakers 81-58 in Mackey Arena.
The 23-point margin of victory marks the worst home loss for Purdue since 2013 and ends the Boilermakers’ 36-game non-conference home winning streak. More significantly, the result sends a clear message: the Cyclones are a genuine national title contender.
The Three-Point Avalanche
The game was a tight affair in the first half, with Iowa State holding a slim 35-31 lead at the break. But the second half turned into a spectacular demonstration of Cyclones’ sharpshooting and defensive pressure that completely overwhelmed the top-ranked Boilermakers.
- 11-0 Run Seals Fate: Iowa State opened the second half with a blistering 11-0 run, capped by three consecutive three-pointers from Tamin Lipsey, Milan Momcilovic, and Killyan Toure. That sprint pushed the lead to $48-33$, and Purdue never recovered.
- Momcilovic Masterclass: Sophomore forward Milan Momcilovic was the star, scoring a game-high 20 points and sinking three of the team’s 11 three-pointers. Freshmen Killyan Toure (13 points) and Joshua Jefferson (11 points) also drained three 3-pointers each, showcasing the Cyclones’ elite depth and outside shooting prowess.
- Elite Efficiency: Iowa State shot an incredible 59% from the field in the second half, finishing the game shooting 54% overall.
Purdue’s Nightmare at Home
The highly touted Boilermakers’ offense faltered under the intense defensive pressure of the Cyclones, who forced 15 turnovers and completely shut down Purdue’s top scorers.
- Top Scorers Silenced: Purdue’s two leading scorers, Fletcher Loyer and Trey Kaufman-Renn, struggled immensely in the first half. Loyer started 1-of-5, and Kaufman-Renn missed his first six shots, struggling to get on track.
- Cold Shooting: The Boilermakers shot a dismal 4-of-18 (22.2%) from three-point range and missed crucial opportunities at the charity stripe, hitting just 6-of-14 free throws.
- The Spirit Stolen: Purdue coach Matt Painter acknowledged the defensive brilliance of the Cyclones after the game. “It was an avalanche,” Painter said. “We had way too many turnovers in the second half, and more than anything, I feel they just stole our spirit. You have to give Iowa State credit; they were the reason for our frustration level. They took us to the woodshed.”
