In a highly anticipated clash of college basketball titans, the No. 25 North Carolina Tar Heels authored a spectacular second-half comeback to defeat the No. 19 Kansas Jayhawks 87-74 in Chapel Hill on Friday night. The victory, UNC’s first over Kansas since 2002, served as a massive statement, especially after the Tar Heels struggled to find their footing through the first 20 minutes against their storied rival.
The contest, played in a rocking atmosphere at the Dean E. Smith Center, saw the Jayhawks control the tempo early. Kansas, which entered the game having won five straight matchups against UNC, built as much as a 10-point first-half lead. In that opening half, KU relied heavily on the long ball, with freshman Bryson Tiller hitting four three-pointers to help Kansas secure a 37-29 advantage heading into the break. UNC, meanwhile, battled turnovers and stagnant offense, shooting a dismal 33.3% from the field.
The narrative completely flipped after halftime.
The Tar Heels emerged with “rousing energy and edge,” transforming their performance in a manner that validated Coach Hubert Davis’ roster construction. The spark came from the frontcourt duo of freshman Caleb Wilson and Arizona transfer Henri Veesaar. Wilson, who finished with a game-high 24 points, and Veesaar, who added 20 points, fueled a relentless offensive surge.
North Carolina ripped off a stretch where they made 18 of their first 23 second-half shots. This offensive explosion—culminating in 58 second-half points—was too much for Kansas to handle. The Jayhawks’ star freshman, Darryn Peterson, kept KU afloat with 22 points. Still, the decisive factor was the defense and tempo shift orchestrated by the Tar Heels, particularly senior Seth Trimble, who added 13 of his 17 points after halftime while taking on the toughest defensive assignment against Peterson.
The stunning 58-37 second-half margin not only erased the deficit but sent a resounding message across the college basketball landscape: the retooling Tar Heels are ready to compete against the nation’s elite.
