The Pittsburgh SportsNation Game Commentary
The wait is over.
The Aaron Rodgers Era is set to begin for the Pittsburgh Steelers, who open their 2025 NFL season with a trip to MetLife Stadium to face the New York Jets, this Sunday, September 7th, at 1:00 PM.
The big question for the Steelers will be how well the 41 year old Rodgers will fare in his Pittsburgh debut.
It’s doubtful that Pittsburgh fans will see the same play that led him to multiple League MVP’s, but despite his age, Rodgers still has a stellar arm and a brilliant offensive mind.
It’s a juicy story-line between the two franchises, considering Rodgers was Jets’ starter last year, while their new quarterback, Justin Fields, started six games for the Steelers in 2024, before being replaced by Russell Wilson– that despite being 4-2, passing for 1,106 yards, five touchdowns and rushing for 231 yards and five more scores.
That drama might be big for the fans and media, but in the Steelers locker room, it’s just the start of the year for them.
“He makes it seem like it’s just another game,” said tight end Pat Freiermuth. “I think that’s cool for us being able to put it in our minds that it’s just another game. Obviously we want to win it for him, but I don’t think he’s living off that we’re going back to his old stomping grounds. I think he’s just ready to compete and play.”
D.K. Metcalf, the Steelers new top weapon at wide receiver, offered his thoughts about Rodgers and the upcoming game.
“I don’t think his former team has anything to do with it,” said Metcalf. “I think he just loves the game of football and he’s ready to go out there and put a product on the field. I know he kind of has a bad taste in his mouth from the previous years, but he just wants to go out there and win as many games as he can.”
Rodgers, considering this season could be his last in what is a Hall of Fame career, is just ready to get the ball rolling, and his new team deep into the playoffs.
“We have so many different guys who can do different things,” said Rodgers. “There are little guys who can run around and make plays inside and outside. You have four capable tight ends and you have three capable backs.
“You have a really freaking smart center. We have some smart players right down the middle of the offense. That’s what all the West Coast coaches always talk about — having a smart center, a smart quarterback. We have the right guys down the middle and guys who can do a lot of things.”
One thing you can expect with Rodgers under center is witnessing passes completed across the middle of the field, a feat as rare as a Browns fan with a full set of teeth, since Ben Roethlisberger retired in 2021.
With tight ends like the aforementioned Freiermuth, newly acquired Jonnu Smith, and the massive Darnell Washington, Rodgers is licking his lips in anticipation of Sunday’s game.
“I think it’s the best tight end room that I’ve been around in 21 years because you have four extremely capable guys,” Rodgers said. “We had different runs at Green Bay where we had some great players, but just the depth that we have here, with four guys who you feel great about having on field at any time, they all have different skill sets they bring to the table.”
Smith, who had 88 receptions for 884 yards and eight touchdowns last year in Miami, is just as excited having Rodgers throw him the ball.
“That means a lot,” said Smith said of Rodgers’ comments. “He’s been around some great talents. We’ve had several conversations of him being in an offense like this with guys who have all these different skill sets. I won’t get into too much scheme, but we have a lot of ways to make our playmakers execute for us.”
Washington, by the way, has caught the eyes of both Rodgers and fellow tight end Smith.
“I can’t even say who’s the most impressive… maybe the biggest guy in the room because of how many things he can do down the field in the passing game,” said Rodgers of Washington. “You know, there was a lot of conversation about: Is he in the right position? The other day, we had a practice during that week before the four days off, and I threw him a bunch of balls in the red zone and I was just thinking to myself, ‘He’s definitely in the right position.’ He’s so big and so athletic. For a man of that size to be that skilled in the passing game is pretty impressive, not to mention what he does on the line of scrimmage.”
“That’s a different beast right there,” said Smith of his teammate. “That’s a different style of player. That guy’s going to be a hell of a player for a long time in this league.”
The Pittsburgh offense will obviously have Rodgers at quarterback, with Metcalf as his #1 wide receiver, and Freiermuth, Smith, and Washington at tight end.
Let’s get to the rest of the offense.
Calvin Austin III is determined to expand his game entering his 4th season, while Roman Wilson is out to prove himself after a disastrous rookie campaign spent on the sidelines injured, and unable to contribute.
Count former Super Bowl Champion head Coach Jon Gruden as a big Wilson fan.
“You’re going to see Calvin Austin, DK Metcalf, and I think you’re going to see a lot of Roman Wilson,” said Gruden. “He is a hell of a player…. Everybody right now is saying, ‘Hey, the Steelers don’t have any wideouts, man.’ Wait til’ you see Roman Wilson.”
Jaylen Warren will be listed as the starter at running back, but it should only be a matter of time before rookie Kaleb Johnson becomes the main guy. For some strange reason, entering Week 1, the Steelers have Johnson at 3rd on the depth chart, behind Waren and Kenneth Gainwell.
Pittsburgh’s run defense should be bolstered by 1st round selection Derrick Harmon, but the rookie defensive lineman will have to wait at least one more week to make his debut, as he injured his knee in preseason.
Yahya Black will start in Harmon’s absence.
Keenu Benton and Cam Heyward round out the d-line.
Pittsburgh’s linebackers will feature T.J. Watt and Alex Highsmith on the outside, with Patrick Queen and Payton Wilson inside.
Darius Slay, Joey Porter, Jr., and Jalen Ramsey will be roaming the secondary at cornerback, with DeShon Elliot at SS, and Juan Thornhill at free safety.
Slay joins the team from the Eagles, while Ramsey, along with Jonnu Smith, was acquired from Jacksonville via trade in the off-season.
It will be put up or shut up for the Steelers defense, the highest paid unit in the NFL.
If the Steelers can generate offense under Rodgers, and the defense can perform up to their standards, this could be a very fun season in Pittsburgh.
Much will depend on left tackle Broderick Jones living up to his billing, along with right tackle Troy Fautanu, 2024’s 1st round pick, that missed his entire rookie season. Mason McCormick and Isaac Seumalo should be formidable at guard, with center Zach Frazier anchoring the line.
The Jets certainly hope Fields is their answer at quarterback, and he’ll get his chance to prove himself, unlike last year in Pittsburgh when Steelers head Coach Mike Tomlin was dead set on playing Wilson, no matter how well Fields played during the first six games.
Fields has one helluva receiver in Garrett Wilson, who had 101 receptions for 1,104 yards and seven touchdowns last year. Behind Wilson is Josh Reynolds and Allen Lazzard.
Rookie tight end Mason Taylor has the talent to become a top 10 player at his position, if the Jets utilize him the right way.
Breece Hall leads the way at running back, with Braelon Allen backing him up. Hall had a very disappointing year in 2024, rushing for just 876 yards with five touchdowns, but he also caught 57 passes for 483 yards and another three touchdowns.
The Jets defense isn’t expected to be great, more like middle of the pack, so despite Rodgers not playing a single snap in preseason, the Steelers offense should be able to move the ball IF Pittsburgh expects to be the type of team they want to be in 2025.
Corner Sauce Gardner, the Jets best defensive player, will likely be assigned to cover Metcalf, who doesn’t care who it is trying to defend him come Sunday.
“The way I look at the game, bro, is they gotta stop me,” Metcalf said. “They gotta stop our offense. I don’t think me asking them would be a lot of insight because I feel like I’m a different player than a lot of receivers they’ve gone up against in the past.”
Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith wants a balanced offense, one that can hit some deep shots, and be physical while running the ball.
Pittsburgh certainly has the personnel to achieve this… now they just have to go out and perform up to their capabilities.
Rodgers may not come out looking like a league MVP, but he’ll get the offense moving, and spread the ball out to the many weapons he has in his arsenal. You can certainly expect those deep shots headed Metcalf’s way, and see why Jon Gruden was so high on his praise for Roman Wilson. Steeler fans are going to love what that guy can do when he is fully healthy.
Warren will lead the way running the ball, but both Gainwell and Johnson will get their share of action and carries.
Defensively, everyone knows what Justin Fields can do if he gets out into the open with his legs. Keeping Fields contained and under pressure is a must for the Pittsburgh pass rush.
It’s going to be exciting watching Jalen Ramsey go toe to toe with Garrett Wilson.
The front seven will have to make due without the services of Harmon for at least the opener. This unit has to find its pride and shut down New York’s running game behind Fields and Hall. The run defense was a joke last year, capped off by the Ravens embarrassing Pittsburgh by shredding them for 299 yards on the ground in the 28-14 playoff loss.
“I don’t tote last year’s bags,” said Tomlin about his defense. “That’s just an agenda that needs to be addressed this year, in 2025. Quarterback mobility and the designed run-game component is a component of today’s game. We’ve done things at a lot of levels to further strengthen ourselves: the acquisition of Derrick Harmon and Yahya Black being two components of it, but others. And we certainly have some schematic things up our sleeve that I won’t disclose in this setting. I just think that each and every year, particularly in today’s game, the way it’s trending, quarterback mobility, the designed run game, the situationally designed run game associated with it, is something that 31 other defenses better be ready to address and plan for as well.”
It seems like a long time since that beating the Steelers took by the Ravens in the playoffs, but the team has drastically improved since that cold January day. The proof will be in the pudding when this game comes to an end Sunday afternoon, and the Steelers are gonna eat good.
