The two big-name quarterbacks everyone is talking about in the 2025 NFL draft are Miami’s Cam Ward and Colorado’s Shadduer Sanders. However, Ole Miss (Mississippi) quarterback Jaxson Dart is worth keeping an eye on as a potential second-round steal.
Dart is a natural leader with a cannon arm and for teams looking for a complete rebuild, while avoiding drafting a first-round quarterback in favor of drafting a different player in round one, Dart could be the quarterback such teams can build around.
While Dart may be a work in progress compared to both Ward and Sanders, Dart clearly has a potential quick development upside that a general manager can’t ignore.
The senior threw for 4,279 yards and 29 touchdowns. He only threw six interceptions this season. Dart’s quarterback rating was 86.3 which was the fourth best in the nation.
Given the fact he threw for so many yards and touchdowns while throwing a minimal number of interceptions, it’s astonishing he managed risks so well and maintained a high quarterback rating doing so.
In the Taxslayer Gator Bowl against Duke (9-4), Dart threw for 404 yards and four touchdowns. He completed 77.1 percent of his passes and did not throw any interceptions.
After watching game film, it’s obvious Dart is comparable to Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen. He has a strong throwing arm with a solid pocket presence. He can also turn into a good improvising Quarterback when necessary. His speed is good but not necessarily at Ravens Quarterback Lamar Jackson’s level.
However, the risk is he takes chances when taking off and running. Though he was successful against the elite defenses of the SEC, he will have to learn early on you can’t take the same chances against NFL defenses. They will make Quarterbacks pay the price with a devastating injury if they don’t play it safe by sliding or running out of bounds.
Dart needs to make sure he doesn’t take any big hits at the next level. He can’t go down the same path as Former Indianapolis Colts Quarterback Andrew Luck. After watching the game film, that has to be a serious concern that General Managers and Coaches will discuss during the pre-draft process. He also could use some improvement in his footwork.
Overall, Dart looks like an early second-round pick with tremendous upside with potential for quick development. He does not look like a long-term project at all.
