With the new on-campus stadium becoming more of a reality, let’s see who will be part of the 2023 USF Bulls as far as recruits. According to many sources, USF has the 79th-ranked recruiting class in all of NCAA football. As for the AAC, they rank 6th in the conference. Six new teams have joined the conference. We all know the Bulls are not going after four or five-star athletes. Also, the transfer portal has helped most teams all over college football. As of right now, the USF Bulls have 17 commits and 16 transfers. With Alex Golesh as the new head coach, he knows how important getting recruits is. Many say that USF has not done a great job with recruiting.
The USF Bulls played the Florida Gators in 2022 and now two players from the Gators have transferred. First, at the running back position is Nay’Quan Wright. Wright will replace fan favorite Brain Battie who transferred to Auburn. He is a redshirt junior. I think he will be as big a part of the offense as he was during the USF spring game. The other is Lloyd Summerall who is a four-star edge rusher. Hopefully, that will help the Bulls’ defense. The problem is that they had tackling issues and were unable to get off the field on the third down. During the spring game, neither one was an issue. Another player that played a big part in the spring game was quarterback Bryce Archie who transferred from Coastal Carolina. The quarterback position is a question that has still not been answered.
Last year’s starter, Gary Bohanan did not play because he is recovering from an injury that occurred in 2022. The two quarterbacks that were featured were Byrum Brown who finished the season off. Archie was the second quarterback used after Brown. They might be the starter and backup when the season starts in September. Another transfer that should help on defense is Kendall Davis the former Oklahoma Sooner, a four-star cornerback. The other two four-star transfers are another edge rusher from Texas, Derrick Harris Jr., and wide receiver Jaden Alexis also from Texas. The USF Bulls will need weapons on offense. Another wide receiver comes in from the same conference as the Texas Longhorns in Seth Jones from the Baylor Bears. The transfers and signees will help this team get better moving forward.
Many will say no matter what, the USF Bulls football program is awful. I read many comments from the stadium article that the money should be used elsewhere. I think the one thing that has been an issue is the Bulls fans want the same kind of winning that went on during the Jim Leavitt era. The AAC is a winnable conference with the top teams leaving for the Big 12. The team that most of us saw at the spring game looks like it could be a promising year. They got signees and transfers that will help on all three aspects of the game. I think this team could win five or six games this year. If they win six, a bowl game would be great for the fans. Looking forward to seeing if the Bulls will use the possible new on-campus stadium as a recruiting tool.
