After a season that produced some ups and downs. Boston College Men’s basketball head coach Earl Grant has not wasted any time addressing the needs of next season’s team. He has already added a player that he believes can help his backcourt be better in 2022-23. Welcome to the Heights Mason Madsen. He is a 6-4, 200-pound guard that has spent the last two years playing ball with the Cincinnati Bearcats in the America Athletic Conference. Coach Grant says of Madsen, “he is a physical athlete who brings experience, enthusiasm, and knowledge of the game.” His talent will be a welcomed addition to ACC basketball.
Madsen is from Rochester, Minnesota, and during his two years with the Bearcat program appeared in 45 games. He averaged just about five points per game while playing fourteen minutes a night. He showed an ability to knock down shots from 3-point range. During the 2021-22 season, Madsen was the leading three-point shooter on the team hitting 36.3% from behind the arc. For his two-year stay at Cincinnati, Madsen was 48-138 (35%). He also demonstrated a serious vertical leap that was measured at 44 inches. The Bearcats were good when Madsen was making three’s as they were 6-1 when Madsen knocked down three or more from deep.
What’s even better is his classroom habits. Madsen found his way onto the dean’s list at Cincinnati. A three-star prospect at Mayo Senior High School, he scored over 2,000 points while there. He, along with his brother Gabe who is now with the Utah men’s basketball program, were coached by their dad Luke. Mason will have three years of eligibility when he joins the Eagles in the fall. The third-year is in part due to Covid-19 rules that have been in place for the past couple of years now.
Boston College will be losing a couple of guards from last season 13-20, and 6-14 in the ACC. Brevin Galloway and Makai Ashton-Langford were both grad students a year ago and have moved on. Madsen will be given every opportunity to replace some of the production that will be lost with those two leaving the program. The hope here is that the trio of Madsen, Quinn Pemberton, and DeMarr Langford Jr. can provide the Eagles’ offense with enough outside shooting to give their big men space inside to go to work. An early test will come in November when the Eagles take part in the Paradise Jam in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
We will be back with more ACC basketball soon.
