Basketball is just about back and it has been a rather busy summer for the UMass-Lowell River Hawks men’s program. First, they are getting ready for their first season of post-season eligibility, they also have news on and off the court about the future and recent past of the program.
When Tyler Livingston first became interested in playing hoops at Lowell, the program was still at the Division Two level. It was not until after he decided to go there did things change. For Livingston, it was a move that has paid off.
The 6-6 forward from Hudson N.H. is going to be given a chance to continue playing ball overseas, as Livingston had signed a professional contract to play in Spain for Arcos Albacete Basket in LEB Plata which is the third tier of the Spanish basketball league system. Livingston leaves at the end of the month and will reside in Albacete.
His season may have landed this opportunity for him as he started and played all 31 games for the River Hawks. He averaged 13.2 points per game and pulled down 4.6 rebounds a contest. He shot 50.2 from the floor, including 46.2 from behind the arc which leads the American East.
Livingston also had an offer from a team in the country of Georgia which he turned down because of turmoil overseas. There was also a team in Germany but those discussions would eventually fall apart.
Before Livingston makes the move to Spain, he will rejoin his former teammates one last time. The River Hawks are heading overseas for the first time as a Division 1 team. They are heading to Italy for ten days on an exhibition tour that gets underway on Aug 17 through the 27th.
When the trip is over, Livingston will return home with the team, pack his belongings, and head off to Spain to find out if he has what it takes to play pro basketball overseas.
