The Tampa Bay Lightning continue their early season homestand Thursday against the Minnesota Wild. Puck drop comes at 7 p.m. ET. The game takes place at Benchmark International Arena in Tampa. Tampa Bay enters the matchup with momentum after winning two consecutive games. The Lightning defeated Philadelphia 4-1 on Monday night. That victory improved Tampa Bay to 2-1-0 after three games. Meanwhile, Minnesota entered Tuesday’s game against Buffalo with a 2-0-0 record. Therefore, Minnesota’s record could change before Thursday’s matchup. The Wild opened with victories over Nashville and Boston. Thursday’s matchup features two talented teams with plenty of offensive firepower.
Lightning Finding Their Game
Tampa Bay opened its season with a disappointing 5-1 loss against the New York Rangers. However, the Lightning quickly responded. They defeated Washington 3-1 during their home opener. Then, Tampa Bay handled Philadelphia 4-1 on Monday. Brayden Point opened the scoring against Philadelphia with a first-period redirection. Pontus Holmberg added another goal only 17 seconds into the second period. Ilya Mikheyev later scored his first goal as a Lightning player. Brandon Hagel finished the scoring with an empty-net goal. Nikita Kucherov recorded two assists during the victory. Tampa Bay also dominated the shot total against Philadelphia. The Lightning finished with a 36-14 advantage in shots. That performance represented another strong defensive effort after beating Washington. Andrei Vasilevskiy stopped 13 shots against Philadelphia. Tampa Bay limited Philadelphia’s opportunities throughout the night.
Minnesota Presents a Bigger Challenge
Minnesota started its season strongly. The Wild defeated Boston 4-1 on Saturday after trailing early. Kirill Kaprizov scored twice during that victory. Quinn Hughes contributed one goal and one assist. Jared Spurgeon also scored, while Jesper Wallstedt stopped 26 shots. Minnesota scored four unanswered goals after Boston grabbed the opening lead. Kaprizov remains the biggest offensive concern for Tampa Bay. He has consistently caused problems for the Lightning throughout his career. Kaprizov entered last March’s meeting with 13 points against Tampa Bay. He produced eight goals and five assists across eight games. Quinn Hughes also presents problems from the blue line. Before last March’s matchup, Hughes owned 15 points across 11 career games against Tampa Bay. He had four goals and 11 assists in those games. Therefore, Tampa Bay must limit Minnesota’s speed through the neutral zone.

Recent Meetings Have Featured Plenty of Goals
These teams split their two meetings during the 2025-26 season. Minnesota dominated the first matchup 5-1 on March 3 in Saint Paul. Matt Boldy recorded three assists in the victory. Filip Gustavsson stopped 24 of Tampa Bay’s 25 shots. Meanwhile, Kucherov scored Tampa Bay’s only goal. However, the Lightning answered emphatically three weeks later. Tampa Bay defeated Minnesota 6-3 on March 24 at Benchmark International Arena. The Wild actually jumped ahead with two first-period power-play goals. Brayden Point started Tampa Bay’s comeback during the second period.
Jake Guentzel and Darren Raddysh also scored during that period. Erik Cernak gave Tampa Bay the lead during the third period. Hagel and Holmberg later added insurance goals. Vasilevskiy stopped 21 of Minnesota’s 24 shots. Tampa Bay finished with a narrow 25-24 advantage in shots. Special teams played a massive role that night. Minnesota converted two of four power-play opportunities. Tampa Bay answered by scoring three times on four power plays. The teams have split their last 10 meetings with five victories apiece. However, Minnesota owns a strong overall history against Tampa Bay.
Stars Could Decide Thursday’s Game
Kucherov remains Tampa Bay’s most dangerous offensive weapon. He scored Tampa Bay’s only goal during the opening loss against New York. He later recorded two assists against Philadelphia. Point also enters Thursday after scoring against Philadelphia. Hagel provides another dangerous scoring threat alongside Tampa Bay’s established stars. However, Minnesota can counter with Kaprizov, Boldy and Hughes. Kaprizov’s history against Tampa Bay makes him especially important. His combination of speed and shooting ability can punish defensive mistakes. Hughes can also control possession and create opportunities from the blue line. Meanwhile, Tampa Bay needs Vasilevskiy to remain sharp. Minnesota has repeatedly found offensive success against the Lightning.

Tampa Bay Faces an Important Early Test
Three games cannot define an NHL season. Still, Tampa Bay’s response following its opening-night loss deserves attention. The Lightning have allowed only two goals during their two-game winning streak. Thursday should provide a tougher examination. Minnesota possesses elite offensive talent and has enjoyed considerable success against Tampa Bay. However, the Lightning showed last March that they can overwhelm Minnesota offensively. Special teams could once again determine the outcome. Tampa Bay must avoid giving Kaprizov and Hughes repeated power-play opportunities. Conversely, the Lightning must capitalize whenever Minnesota heads to the penalty box. Another factor will involve Tampa Bay’s defensive structure. The Lightning controlled Philadelphia by limiting quality opportunities and dominating possession.
They need another disciplined performance against a much more dangerous Minnesota attack. Thursday’s game offers an intriguing early-season measuring stick. Minnesota wants to continue its strong opening stretch. Tampa Bay wants to extend its winning streak and defend home ice. If recent history provides any indication, fans should expect scoring opportunities. The Lightning and Wild have combined for 15 goals across their last two meetings. Tampa Bay hopes Thursday’s latest chapter ends like the previous meeting in Tampa. That night finished with six Lightning goals and a home victory.
Look for the Wild to test the Lightning after a two-game winning streak.
