The Boston Red Sox continued their remarkable turnaround Friday night by completing a doubleheader sweep of the Tampa Bay Rays. Boston claimed a 5-3 victory in the second game after dominating the opener 10-0. The two wins stretched the Red Sox winning streak to 11 games, their longest since September 2016.
The latest victory also carried extra significance for Boston. The Red Sox improved to 48-48 and reached the .500 mark for the first time since the second game of the season. After spending months trying to climb back into contention, Boston finally reached an even record behind another balanced performance.
The Rays wasted little time putting pressure on the home team. Tampa Bay grabbed a 2-0 lead in the opening inning after Johnny DeLuca delivered a two-run single. However, Boston answered immediately and completely changed the game’s momentum.
Wilyer Abreu sparked the comeback with a two-run home run that erased the early deficit. Moments later, All-Star Willson Contreras followed with a solo homer to give Boston a 3-2 lead. The back-to-back blasts energized the crowd and continued the offensive surge that carried the Red Sox throughout the day.
Contreras returned to the lineup after serving a five-game suspension. Major League Baseball suspended him following a benches-clearing incident against the Washington Nationals last month. Originally, the league handed him a seven-game suspension. However, an appeal reduced the penalty to five games, allowing him to return sooner than expected.
His return made an immediate impact. Contreras launched his 21st home run of the season in his first game back, giving Boston an early advantage. His power bat strengthened an offense that has produced timely hits throughout the winning streak.
The Rays refused to fade quietly. All-Star third baseman Junior Caminero continued his outstanding season by crushing his 29th home run of the year in the third inning. The blast tied the game at 3-3 and gave Caminero the American League lead in home runs.
Boston answered again before the inning ended. Abreu stepped to the plate and delivered another home run, his second of the night and 13th of the season. The solo shot restored Boston’s lead at 4-3 and marked the sixth multi-home run game of Abreu’s major league career.
The Red Sox added an important insurance run in the fifth inning. Anthony Siegler lined a run-scoring double that pushed Boston’s advantage to 5-3. Although the offense quieted afterward, the pitching staff took complete control for the remainder of the contest.
Boston’s bullpen turned in another dominant performance. Six relievers combined for 6 2/3 scoreless innings after the starter exited early. Greg Weissert earned the victory and improved to 2-2 by helping shut down Tampa Bay’s lineup.
All-Star closer Aroldis Chapman finished the job in impressive fashion. Chapman retired all three hitters he faced during a perfect ninth inning. He collected his 20th save of the season while preserving Boston’s two-run lead.
The Rays struggled to generate offense after the third inning despite their fast start. Caminero’s home run represented their final run of the game as Boston’s relievers consistently escaped every threat.
Tampa Bay starter Mason Englert endured another difficult outing. He allowed five runs across five innings and fell to 0-3 on the season. The Red Sox capitalized on their scoring opportunities and never surrendered the lead after Abreu’s second homer.
Earlier Friday, Boston dominated the first game of the doubleheader with a convincing 10-0 victory. Rookie Jake Bennett delivered six outstanding innings on the mound to lead the way. Meanwhile, Masataka Yoshida and Carlos Narváez each homered as the Red Sox overwhelmed Tampa Bay from the opening inning.
The doubleheader sweep highlighted every strength Boston has shown during its winning streak. The lineup produced timely power, the pitching staff limited scoring chances, and the bullpen continued locking down late innings. Every part of the roster contributed during another impressive day.
Meanwhile, the Rays left Boston searching for answers after dropping both games. Tampa Bay showed flashes of offensive production early in the nightcap, yet the club failed to solve Boston’s bullpen once again. That inability prevented the Rays from mounting another comeback.
The series continues Saturday with Tampa Bay expected to send left-hander Ian Seymour to the mound. Seymour enters the matchup with a 6-2 record and a 4.59 ERA. Boston plans to counter with left-hander Patrick Sandoval, who owns a 0-0 record and a 2.08 ERA.
Boston now carries plenty of momentum into the weekend. Eleven straight victories have completely changed the outlook of its season. If the Red Sox continue playing at this level, they could quickly become a serious factor in the American League playoff race.
