LOWELL, MA — A high-stakes battle at Edward A. LeLacheur Park on Tuesday night saw the Lowell Spinners continue their midseason surge, edging out the Westfield Starfires in a gritty 6-4 victory.
With both teams fighting to climb the Futures Collegiate Baseball League (FCBL) standings, the game carried significant playoff implications. The red-hot Spinners entered the night riding a two-game winning streak, sitting just four games back of the final playoff spot. Conversely, the visiting Starfires arrived in Lowell looking to right the ship after a brutal stretch, having dropped seven of their last ten games.

Early Spinners Dominance
Lowell’s offense got to work early in the bottom of the first. Second baseman Jack Quigley drew a leadoff walk to set the table, moving into scoring position on a throwing error by Westfield’s starting pitcher, Zach Ruffing. Minutes later, Nic Lembo lifted a sacrifice fly to deep outfield, scoring Quigley and getting Lowell on the board first.
In the third, Quigley showcased his power. Facing Ruffing, the second baseman launched a towering solo home run over the left-field wall and straight into the trees, pushing the lead to 2-0.
Lowell manufactured another run in the fourth. With runners on the corners, Charlie Beauregard took off for second base on a stolen base attempt; the ensuing throw went wild, allowing Lorenzo Camilleri to cross the plate and extend the lead to 3-0. An additional run in the bottom of the fifth cushioned Lowell’s lead to a comfortable 4-0.
Pitching Duel Decisively Shifts
Lowell starter Jake Zawatsky was absolutely spectacular. Making his tenth appearance of the summer, the right-hander baffled Westfield hitters over five scoreless frames:
-
Innings Pitched: 5.0
-
Hits Allowed: 2
-
Runs: 0
-
Walks: 0
-
Strikeouts: 4
With Zawatsky’s night complete, the Spinners turned to reliever Mikey St. Martin to make his team debut in the top of the sixth. However, the Starfires quickly spoiled his welcome.
Westfield erupted to tie the game in the blink of an eye. Cole Silvia got the rally started with a sharp, two-run single. A few batters later, Morris Fried delivered the loudest blow of the night—a monstrous 431-foot blast over the left-field wall. The home run leveled the score at 4-4 and cut St. Martin’s debut short.
The Spinners threatened to recapture the lead in the bottom of the sixth by loading the bases, but Cam Biller lined out to right field to strand the runners.
Clinging to the Lead
The tie was finally broken in the bottom of the seventh. Lembo reached on a fielder’s choice, immediately swiped second base, and raced home on a clutch single to center field by Camilleri, reclaiming a 5-4 lead for Lowell.
From there, the bullpen took complete control. Anthony Mateo entered in the eighth and immediately shut down the Starfire bats, striking out two of the three hitters he faced.
In the bottom of the eighth, Lowell added a crucial insurance run. The ever-dangerous Quigley drew a walk, promptly stole second and third, and dashed home on an RBI single to right by Cam Biller (2-for-4, 1 RBI) against a drawn-in infield.
Mateo returned to the mound in the ninth, slamming the door to lock down the 6-4 victory and extend Lowell’s winning streak to three games. Graham Garvin earned the win in relief, while Westfield’s Noah Farrell was saddled with the loss.
Clubroom Reaction: “Scratch and Claw”
Following the game, manager Kevin Graber was full of praise for his squad’s resilience:
“I loved the way the team scratched and clawed their way to a win on Tuesday night. Though the front-end pitching from Zawatsky and the back-end from Mateo were absolutely awesome, it was the team’s fight that made the difference.”
Graber noted that he is feeling great about where his team stands as they continue their playoff push. He also handed out a well-deserved postgame shoutout to Jack Quigley, who put together a spectacular statistical night: 2-for-4, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 3 runs scored, and 2 stolen bases.
Next Up: The Spinners will look to extend their winning streak to four games as they remain at LeLacheur Park tonight (Wednesday) to face the Norwich Sea Unicorns. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
