Scottie Scheffler will enter the Open Championship with extra preparation time after missing the projected cut at the Genesis Scottish Open. The world No. 1 golfer finished the first two rounds at even par. However, the projected cut line settled at 2-under, leaving Scheffler outside the weekend field. Scheffler opened the tournament with a solid 2-under 68 at The Renaissance Club in North Berwick, Scotland. However, he could not build on that momentum during Friday’s second round. Instead, he carded an even-par 72, leaving him at even par through 36 holes. As a result, his impressive streak of consecutive weekends came to an end.
The missed cut snapped one of golf’s most remarkable streaks. Scheffler had made 78 consecutive cuts dating back to the 2022 FedEx St. Jude Championship. That run stood 51 tournaments longer than the next closest active streak, which belonged to Matt Fitzpatrick. The consistency highlighted Scheffler’s dominance over nearly four seasons against the strongest fields in professional golf. The result also marked another rare achievement for the world No. 1. He will finish outside the top 25 of a PGA Tour event for the first time since tying for 33rd at the 2024 BMW Championship. Week after week, Scheffler routinely placed himself near the top of leaderboards. Therefore, missing a weekend represents an unusual outcome for the 20-time PGA Tour winner.
Scheffler acknowledged that his performance never gained momentum. He admitted that a slow start created immediate pressure. Furthermore, he said he failed to hit approach shots close enough to generate realistic birdie opportunities. Without enough quality chances, he struggled to recover and ultimately finished above the projected cut line. His statistics reflected those struggles. Scheffler found only 11 of 26 fairways during the first two rounds. In addition, he hit just 23 of 36 greens in regulation. Most importantly, he lost nearly two strokes with his approach play, an area that normally ranks among the strongest parts of his game. Those numbers explain why he could not produce the low scores needed to continue his streak.
Despite the disappointing finish in Scotland, Scheffler still enters next week’s Open Championship among the favorites. He captured the 2025 Open Championship at Royal Portrush Golf Club in Northern Ireland for his fourth major championship. Now, he will attempt to defend that title at Royal Birkdale Golf Club in Southport, England. History also adds another challenge. No golfer has successfully defended an Open Championship title since Padraig Harrington accomplished the feat in 2008 and 2009. Scheffler now has an opportunity to end that lengthy drought if he can quickly put the Scottish Open behind him.
Although Scheffler has not won since claiming the American Express in his first PGA Tour start of the season, he has continued producing elite results. He has recorded nine top 10 finishes, and four runner-up finishes this season. Those performances demonstrate that his game remains among the strongest in professional golf despite the recent lack of victories. His consistency nearly produced another major championship last month. Scheffler played in the final group on Sunday at the U.S. Open before finishing tied for fourth. That performance reinforced why he continues to hold the world’s top ranking.
More recently, Scheffler came close to another victory at the Travelers Championship. He battled Viktor Hovland through regulation before falling in a Monday playoff. Although he missed another opportunity to win, his strong play confirmed that he remains in excellent form entering the season’s final major. Instead of competing through the weekend in Scotland, Scheffler will travel early to Royal Birkdale. The extra practice time could prove valuable because he has never played the famous links course. Learning its layout, adjusting to its conditions, and becoming comfortable with its greens may provide an advantage before championship week begins.
Scheffler also noted that today’s PGA Tour schedule differs from previous years because several signature events no longer feature cuts. Even so, he expressed pride in his remarkable consistency throughout the season. He admitted disappointment about missing the weekend but viewed the additional preparation time as a positive opportunity before the Open Championship. While the missed cut ends a historic streak, it does little to change expectations surrounding Scheffler. He remains the world’s top-ranked golfer and one of the sport’s most consistent performers. His recent results continue to place him among the favorites whenever he tees it up.
Every golfer eventually experiences an off week. For Scheffler, that week arrived in Scotland. Nevertheless, his body of work over the past several seasons suggests this result represents an exception rather than the beginning of a decline. Now, his attention shifts completely toward Royal Birkdale, where he will attempt to defend his Open Championship title and add a fifth major victory to his already remarkable career.
