Early Punch From the Spinners Offense
Lowell tagged Vermont starter Alvin Gomez for three runs in the second inning to jump out to an early lead in front of 2,333 fans at LeLacheur Park. Nic Lembo, Esteban Dessureault, and Bradley McCafferty opened the frame with consecutive hits off Gomez, who entered the night with a microscopic 1.99 ERA. McCafferty’s sharp single to left field drove in Lembo for the first run, while Aidan Driscoll and Quincy Kerr followed with consecutive RBI groundouts. Spinners starter Hayden Schimoler protected the 3-0 cushion early, cruising through three scoreless frames while allowing just one hit.
Vermont Rallies and the Bullpen Battle Begins
The Lake Monsters finally tagged up Schimoler in the fifth inning. Elias Huber and Zack Geerstma ignited the rally with back-to-back singles, and a Patrick Sharke walk loaded the bases with one out. Tyler Wiltsey chased Schimoler from the game with an RBI single to left, bringing Dylan Lawrence out of the Lowell bullpen. Lawrence failed to strand the runners, surrendering a two-run single to Hunter Strohm that knotted the game at 3-3. Geerstma then broke the tie in the top of the sixth, launching a solo home run into the left-center field trees to give Vermont its first lead of the weekend.
Defensive Miscues Exchange the Lead
Lowell snatched the lead back in the bottom of the sixth with plenty of help from the Vermont defense. After loading the bases against reliever Brandon Rowinelli, Quincy Kerr hit a routine grounder to shortstop. Geerstma stepped on second base for the second out but threw wildly to first, allowing two runs to cross the plate and gifting Lowell a 5-4 edge. Vermont answered in the eighth against reliever Grant McCubrey, who was making his Spinners debut. Sharke reached on a Zander Bratspis fielding error, advanced on a Bryan Richman single, and scored the winning run when Strohm laced his second critical RBI single of the night.
Ninth-Inning Fireworks and a Furious Lowell Rally
Vermont seemingly put the game out of reach with a massive six-run explosion in the top of the ninth. Geerstma capped his spectacular 4-for-5 night by punishing McCubrey with a towering three-run blast to left-center, extending the margin to 12-5. Down to their final three outs, the Spinners mounted a furious counter-attack against Sam Lebrecque, batting around to bring the tying run to the plate. Dessureault cleared the bases with a three-run double, and Bratspis followed with an RBI single to slice the deficit to 12-9. Lebrecque finally settled down, striking out Kerr swinging to halt the rally and secure the win for Brett Gabel in relief.
The three-game series concludes Monday night at LeLacheur Park with the rubber match scheduled for 7 PM.
