Lowell welcomed 2,311 fans to LeLacheur Park on Saturday night for the opener of a three-game series against the Vermont Lake Monsters. The visiting Lake Monsters entered the night with a stellar 9-4 away record, while the hometown Spinners looked to correct a sluggish 4-6 start on their own turf.
Left-hander Caden Smith climbed the mound for Lowell, bringing a steady 3.38 ERA over 21.1 summer frames into his sixth appearance. Vermont countered with Keller Vogt, who mirrored Smith with an identical 3.38 ERA over 16 innings of work. The Lake Monsters usually rely on an explosive offense that averages 6.36 runs per game, but early defensive mistakes completely derailed their rhythm.
Lowell broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the third inning by taking advantage of sloppy defense. Jack Quigley drew a one-out walk, advanced to second on Vogt’s failed pickoff attempt, and promptly swiped third base. Spencer Warfield entered the night batting just .150, but he pulled a sharp single into center field to drive Quigley home.
Defensive Meltdown Sinks Lake Monsters
Vermont’s defensive struggles amplified in the fourth inning. Two additional fielding errors pushed the Lake Monsters’ total to four miscues in just four frames, handing Lowell two more unearned runs. The Spinners built a comfortable 3-0 cushion by capitalizing entirely on those mistakes.
Meanwhile, Smith kept the potent Vermont lineup completely off balance. The Lowell starter carried a masterful one-hitter through five dominant frames. Vermont finally scratched across a run in the top of the sixth when Tommy Popoff walked, advanced on a Tyler Wiltsey bunt single down the third-base line, and crossed the plate on a passed ball.
Lowell answered immediately in the bottom of the frame against reliever Kevin Rusinak. The Spinners collected three hits in the inning, highlighted by Cam Biller’s bases-loaded double to left field. The clutch hit drove in two runs and quickly extended Lowell’s lead to 6-1.
Mateo Shuts the Door in the Ninth
Smith exited the game in the seventh inning after 6.2 solid frames. He finished his night allowing five hits and three earned runs while striking out two. Vermont mounted a brief comeback bid against the bullpen as Zach Geerstma and Popoff delivered consecutive RBI doubles to bring the score to 6-3.
Reliever Sean McNamara made his Spinners debut with two outs in the seventh but struggled with his command in the eighth. Two wild pitches gifted Vermont their fourth run of the night to narrow the gap. Lowell quickly countered in the bottom of the eighth, manufacturing a run to push the lead back to 7-4.
Anthony Mateo took the mound for Lowell in the ninth inning to close out the victory. Mateo dominated the final frame, striking out the side to secure the 7-4 win for the Spinners (9-19). Game two of the three-game set starts Sunday at 5 PM at LeLacheur Park.
